If you live in Ward Seven, or if you have a Zone 1 parking permit (which, I guess may apply to people in other wards) don't forget to put your new resident parking sticker on your car.

On my drive this morning, I saw DOZENS of bright orange pieces of paper staring back at me on cars with the old sticker. The city is not giving any leniency in this matter, near as I can tell.

I just swapped out my sticker. Is it the cold that makes the old ones so hard to remove? The thing was adhered like barnacle.

Well, this train is coming at the end of February for residents to the east of Davis Square; my sticker's up at the end of this month. A little advance (although oblique) warning never hurts?

But what are people getting ticketed for? Not having the new sticker, or having both an old and new sticker?

I think the post here is just fine, but no part of Ward One is within a mile of Davis Square. Ward One starts at Gilman Square and goes east from there.

For what it's worth, I got bagged on two cars last year - 8am on the morning of the new stickers. I threw myself on the mercy of the appeals guy at Traffic & Parking, and he tossed them both.

Can someone point me to anything other than anecdotal evidence that specific wards or neighborhood have their own specific numbered stickers vs they get renewed one year after you get them and the number is the month of renewal?

Date: 2008-02-01 04:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pierceheart.livejournal.com
I know you get a sticker based on where you live and not based on when you go in to get a sticker.

How do you know this? Where is it written down, because many people have said it on this LJ, but no one has shown me anything on the city's page or in the policies that backs that up.

Yet.

Sticker numbers

Date: 2008-02-01 04:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nomirena.livejournal.com
Funny you should bring this up! I went to get my new sticker on Wednesday because I'd moved from Teele to Inman and she handed me a number 6 sticker, so I said, oh, I'm in ward 2, I thought I'd get a 2 sticker. And she said, the numbers don't correspond to wards, they just indicate the month your permit is up.

And by the way, I CANNOT get my old sticker off. Any suggestions? Now that they're on the front windshield, they should really make them less adhesive. My work permit is really easy to take off and replace, so it is possible to provide easily removable stickers. Maybe that should go on the ballot this year.

We were in 6-3 on the east side of Jay Street (with Ward 7 across the street) until 1999, we had Zone 8 stickers.

Now we're back over by the Brown School, 6-2 I think, and the stickers are Zone 2.

The number is definitely the month of renewal; but a newcomer or new vehicle will get a sticker depending on the neighborhood. We bought a new car in June or July 1998; they gave us a replacement Zone 8 sticker, and made us come back and renew it in a couple of months.

I live in Ward 6, and my sticker has a 2, which means I need to renew in February. The stickers always expire in February if you live in my neighborhood.

I know because I bought a new car in November. The sticker was only good until February. It was not good for an entire year.

I don't know which ward I live in (near Inman), have a sticker with a 6 on it, but I know it expires in June because my visitor passes have a huge "JUNE" written along the side.

This will tell you what ward you live in, and where your polling place is for next Tuesday's election. Inman Square area is Ward 2.

Removing old stickers

Date: 2008-02-01 06:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tt02144.livejournal.com
The Somerville Parking Permits are notoriously hard to remove. And, yes, the cold makes it even harder. I usually use a razor blade and it works pretty well. If you're parked near your house where you can run an extension, a blow dryer will take it right off completely! Bumper stickers, too, by the way. I've even removed bumper stickers from one car this way andplaced them on my new(er) car - good as new!

Can we just put the sticker above the old one, or does it have to be totally replaced?

Hair dryer + razor blade + goo gone.

Or, if your car is a mess, you can get it detailed for $30 down at the Somerville Car wash and ask them to take the old stickers off. They do a good job.

I *heart* my old permits!

I can't fathom why anyone would want to remove one! I don't live in Somerville anymore and I still have five permits on my side window, proudly displayed. I would have liked to have collected more :)

So... since I moved, you now have to put them in the front windshield? The side window is no longer an option? I guess that would explain why you'd want to remove it -- don't want to be cluttering up the front windshield.

what i've been doing the past coupe of years is *not* using the sticker's adhesive backing to affix to the window. i affix the permit to a piece of plastic wrap, basically to negate the adhesive. then i just use two small pieces of scotch tape to mount the permit. takes about 2 seconds to remove, yet doesn't look any different than if it were "stickered" to the glass (in case you're worried about permit theft).

It shouldn't be too hard to cook up our own list of which part of town has which sticker. While we don't know if they correspond to wards or not ( I wouldn't be shocked if the business district around Davis is its own zone ), it might make a good starting point esp. for those who dont want to give their exact street.

Here's what i've been able to find under the threaded comments. And it looks like you keep the same number sticker if you move across town:

Ward 7: 1, A
Ward 6: 8, Z
Ward 2/Inman: 6

I brought my car to Somerville in October. My permit expires in March, as do the permits of everyone else in my building...
