=o= If you bought a place in Somerville that was not already flagged for the residential exemption on property taxes, March 31 may be your deadline to qualify for FY08. Download the form from the web site and call 311 if you have any questions.

=o= As most of you probably know (but perhaps it was hard to really absorb since Tom Champion didn't make that call) April 1 marks the start of street-sweeping season, so sign up for reminders and get ready for the biweekly car shuffle.

=o= Also, as long as I'm posting, don't forget the April 2nd Meet-Up at the Burren. Tommy C., any chance you'll grace us with your silky-voiced presence this time?

How hard is it to find a spot during this shuffle typically? I'm just curious, I want to know what to expect. I live over by Orchard and Day and really don't use my car. I don't know how tough it is when parking on one side only..I have a feeling its not easy to find a spot if you wait too long to move it? This may sound dumb to people who are used to this, but I'm not so I wanted to ask. Thanks ;-)

When I still had a car there, it could be a pain at time. If you don't use your car, you should consider selling it.

It depends on the street. For the first three years I lived in Davis, I never used my car, save once a week to go to the grocery store.

What I would do is move it to the alternate side when I used it on the weekends. Then, I would just leave it on the safe side until the next weekend. I used to find more spaces available during the days on weekends, especially int he summer.

Be careful, though, as there are rare months when the second Wednesday can follow the first Tuesday (for example), and you have to go out on Tuesday night to move it.

I recommend marking a calendar as a reminder.

Thanks, that's a good idea, I think I will. Like you, I use my car for runs to MB, and to get out of town if I need to. I still have 3 months of payments left..so I'm so close to finally owning it - lol. I can definately plan my parking out in advance though.

It's really not that big of a deal to keep a car on the street during street sweeping season, even if you rarely use it.

My only advice is to just make sure you remember to move it and beware of those first Tuesday/second Wednesday periods.

I was towed once, and then refunded the money by the City for the towing.

Why did the city refund you the money?

That would be the primary reason I wish I owned a car.

It REALLY depends on the street. Not only in terms of how easy/hard it is to park, but how early/late the ticketers come by. On my street, you usually have until 8:30ish even though technically the restrictions begin at 8:00.

As everyone's favourite Dirty Dancer once sang:

"She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind "

Can you come before or after rehearsal?

No. :-( It starts early and goes 'til late.

Next month though, I'll totally be at Meet-Up.

so - when it says 'odd side of street' 1st and 3rd Wednesday - does that mean park on the odd side, or they clean the odd side. i signed up on the link given above, and it doesn't explain what it means.
Thanks ;-)

The signs on each side of the street say when parking is prohibited due to street sweeping.
