Diesel, because they actually know what they are doing. I'm not a huge fan of their drip coffee though which is what I mostly get in terms of coffee products. I've heard that I should try True Grounds but I'm not sure exactly where it is.

Seconded enthusiastically. On the best of days, the place is hostile and nasty. Combine that with them frequently running out of things like cups ("I can put your coffee in a plastic cup but it might melt,"), cup lids ("Just carry it real carefully,"), and utensils, and I avoid it at all costs.

the Davis SQ Micky's is a little wacky though. McD's is advertising their sweet tea heavily, but Davis SQ doesn't have it. and their menu is generally abbreviated compared to other McD's.

I grudgingly chose Diesel, because I am bitter (BITTER) that both Bhoja and O'Natural's went away; otherwise I would vote for those (and in that order). Hate Diesel's espresso, but otherwise prefer it over the other options. Until I spend more time at Mr. Crepe, cause I really haven't given them a chance yet.

I voted for Mr. Crepe due to my translation of the poll to "best coffee in Davis" as opposed to best coffee shop, which to me is about atmosphere and where you want to hang. As for that I would have to vote for Star*ucks over Diesel. The indie liberal in me dies a little, but I find the chairs, couches and fireplace to be extremly cozy.

Clearly I range a little farther than some. My three top picks (from the list) are all... not in Davis square

I love True Grounds - indie atmosphere, comfortable seating

Zing has asian spring rolls (vegan and non) or at least they used to, as well as mexican hot chocolate (mmm, spicy) and several other neat things.

Grand Prix (which is out on Mass Ave.) giant screens playing the current footba.. er, for you americans, 'soccer' games (volume off), free 'net, and some very interesting coffee and tea options, as well as yummy pastries.

The Broken Yolk is where I prefer to go, free muffin with coffee before 11! Such a delight. They don't make any of those other coffee drinks though (I guess they also make iced coffee, but that's about it?) but I have active disdain for those things.

It's been awhile since I've gotten coffee at any of these places, since I've been on a tea kick, but I remember Diesel and Zing having my favorite drip and iced coffees in the area, respectively. Diesel's pastries are nearly all ridiculously overpriced as well as terrible, so odds go to Zing for serving those awesome scones by Petsi Pies.

Sigh. I think I still like Diesel slightly better for just me, but over the last year+ I've been going to Cafe Zing a whole lot more because it's a lot easier to navigate with a baby. And we're down that way for story hours and such several times a week anyway.

I tried Diesel once with the stroller and it was Not Good.

Best Coffee Shop in and around Davis Square

Not that I care really, but it is funny that the poll is for best coffee shop in or around Davis SQ, and people voted for places that no longer exist, or for places where they like the food--but don't drink coffee, or for places where they like to hang out--but not necessarily drink coffee, or for places that are decidedly not near Davis.

But it wouldn't be davis_square LJ without it! Fight the man by voting for a coffee-shop that no longer exists! If Gus had given two shits about the place, it might still be around today.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with voting for a coffee shop you like, if you go there and drink non-coffee-like substances like chai, since we're not voting for best coffee.
