Do any of the bars around here have a karaoke night? If not, going further out into Cambridge/Boston, is there anywhere in particular you might recommend?
They used to have it at the Burren, but that was several years ago and my hunch is that is gone. I think the closest you are going to get is the Asgard on Wednesday nights (central square).
Of course, there is always Rock Band at Orleans in which you can sing and its sort of karaoke-ish ;)
Powderhouse is undergoing renovations right now though and they're closed. They just changed ownership and they seem to be giving the place a bit of a polish.
But now I know where Tommy Doyle's is...it just kind of appeared on my new DiningIn menu.
that's cool; I never go there unless I absolutely need to get out of the house and want a drink; its such a pit and not even a decent dive bar. it's be nice to have a good bar right around the block.
I second the Tommy Doyle's in Harvard Sq. Karaoke there is every Wednesday from 10-1 (after Trivia). I'm there every week (at least while I'm in town).
As for the powderhouse, they had Karaoke from 10-1 on Tuesday and Thursday, but I have no idea if they will continue that when they reopen. I used to go every Tuesday. On Thursday's they had a Karaoke Contest which wasn't quite my cup of tea.
If you're looking for an earlier Karaoke, Tommy Doyle's in Kendall Sq (next to CBC) has Karaoke at 8pm. I go there sometimes when I'm free earlier in the day.
For a different quality of karaoke there's also the Courtside on Cambridge Street in Cambridge. I wouldn't recommend them, but I don't know anything else on Friday.
I second (third? fourth?) the recommendation of the Asgard on Wednesday nights. I've never been to Razzy's, but I've heard good things. I went to the Limelight once, and it was awful. The backing vocals on the karaoke tracks were so loud the singers couldn't be heard. And I've heard good things about Courtside, but you have to get there really early, or you won't get a chance to sing. It gets packed fast.
