Hi all-

I did a (admittedly half-hearted) search around the site and didn't see this anywhere, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I missed every weekend that the knife sharpener was at the Union Square Farmers Market this summer (I always happened to be there on the off-weekend!). Does anyone know of a good year-round sharpener? Holiday cooking reminded me of how dull my knives are getting...

I'm pretty sure that knives can be dropped off at Tags in Porter Square for sharpening.

Sciraco is great, you can either drop off you shears/knives at tags or they will come to your house and pick them up. He did a great job and the turnaround time was really fast. They have a website too if you need to call/email them.

For the benefit of people who will find this post in the future, could you link to his website and give us a phone number? Thanks.

(A google search for sciraco knife sharpening found nothing.)

Those are the same people that do the sharpening for Tags. It worked well for me. http://www.siracosharpening.com/

Do you happen to know whether these guys hand-sharpen the knives on a soap stone or use a grinding wheel?

No idea. But let us know what they say if you call them to ask...

Grinding belt/stone. They have the equipment in the van, and I watched them doing some work at Union Square. :)

Sorry that I was unclear. When I said "belt," I was indicating that it was electric. I realized that there was likely a stone attached to the device for the belt, so added "/stone" to clarify that it was a belt+stone setup. It is an electric machine.

If you want a whetstone grind, you can go to stoddards at the shops at chestnut hill.

This might sounds stupid, but how does one drop off knives for sharpening? I can't imagine they'd be thrilled if I handed them a plastic bag of my knives (in need of sharpening but very much able to slide a good chunk of skin off).

You can rip a paper bag and wrap it around the blade a few times and tape it together. I think that's how I got them back the last time I picked them up from the Union Square farmers market.
