See previous post. Presumably, recouping their losses to theft.

are they any kind of nonprofit? cause it seems weird to raise money for a for-profit business.

Well, apparently I was wrong anyway, and it's not directly related to the theft.

Still, it's a small independently-owned business that adds a lot to the community, and I for one don't mind. Nobody who feels weird about it has to contribute, of course.

i love the someday as much as the next liberal weiner in davis (hell, i lived with a someday manager for a year) but aren't you owned by a company? a company that has insurance? you're not really a non-profit "cause" -- not sure why a business would hold a self-serving fundraiser.

note: i do think this is a really shitty thing that happened and i also hope no one was hurt and that no one will lose a job over this (due to lost funds).

The guy who owns Someday is just that: a guy. He's a really gregarious and generous guy, who gives back a *lot* to the community. He owns Toscanini's and is always giving ice-cream to non-profit groups for their fund-raisers. I would bet that a grand is just under a minimum deductible for an insurance claim (and might raise the cost of his insurance?) but more than he can easily spare. If Gus is behind the fund-raiser, then I believe that it makes good sense.

umm ... i guess i'm not familiar with tales of "gus the benevolent." having lived with a former manager (and thus had many someday cafe employees over our house all the time) i am more familiar with "gus who wants to yuppify the someday and ignore the concerns of the employees." they can do what they want, i'm just saying i find it odd for a business to throw a fund raiser.

organizers?

Who's organizing the auction? I'd like to donate one of our fourth amendment tote-bags (http:www.handsoffmybag.com) to be auctioned off. Could you ask whoever is organizing it to drop me a line at the email addy attached to my LJ account?

the someday is one of the last 'businesses' in Boston which cares about the community, or even more, IS a community.

and we all know how hard it is to find an honest, no bullshit community in these parts...........

Someday doesn't make much profit, it doesn't even exist without the people who love it.

it is a dying rockstar, it is a humble blip on the somerville map, it's barely breaking even, but still donates to charities and offers the best coffee in the north east, at a ridiculous rate (for them to order from seattle...)

THE SOMEDAY CAFE exists so you can have a FUCKING great cup of coffee and you don't have to go to starbucks for burnt beans.

SO...... if the someday NEEDS a new floor, because the one they have now is 11 years old... and they're offering you a night of awesome music, prizes and chance to get to know your neighbors better.... don't hesitate to pay eight dollars at the door. they've given so much already......

If a Cafe in that location with that kind of foot traffic outside their door can't turn a decent profit they must be doing something terribly wrong.

yeah Starbucks, DD, Diesel, & Carberry's are all in the square. It's hard to run a small business. What is terrible is those who frequent these chains. Blame the small business always works...

um. why is Diesel up there with starbucks, D&D and Carberry's??? Diesel is definately a small business.
sorry, it just made me feel weird seeing it written inbetween Dunkin's and Carberry's..... so i had to say something.

Yes.. running a small business is hard..I run one. Davis Sq is full of small businesses, most of them are doing well because it is such a great location. There are many examples of small businesses doing well. Even with the glut of cafes in the square, there is probably enough traffic to support all of them. On many nights there is not an empty seat in any of them. If for some reason the Someday can't make a decent profit they simply need to make some changes. A cafe in that location next to the theater and the T stop is a VERY viable business.
