Can anyone tell me how we get rid of scrap metal in Somerville. I have the sheet metal panels from what was once a washing machine. Neither regular trash pick-up nor recycling took it, so it's still there. I don't have a car for taking it anywhere. Is there any service for pickup of this sort of thing? Thanks!

i am apparently hibernating through the winter without getting a haircut, and i look fairly shaggy at the moment. i've got wavy hair, and have always had trouble finding a hairstylist who could cut it well.

i'd love some recommendations/reviews of local salons- hopefully not too expensive or pretentious, please.

From reliable sources I hear that Loew's Fresh Pond Cinema will close after its early evening shows this Thursday night. AMC is taking over Loew's, and apparently this is not one of the properties AMC wants to keep.

I don't yet know whether this closing is permanent, or just temporary for transition to new ownership.

Yesterday's Globe City Weekly section has an article about Davis Square, specifically how it seems to be inexorably shifting from retail stores to restaurants. It was written by Patrick Gerard Healy ([livejournal.com profile] pgh06), who posts in this community from time to time.

The Davis Square Task Force will meet this Wednesday evening to discuss various topics regarding the future of Davis Square:

- Do we want a Quizno's sub shop where Disc Diggers used to be?
- Would 2 a.m. bar closings be good or bad for our neighborhood?
- What should go into the square's empty storefronts (such as Buck-a-Book and the Citizens Bank building), and how can we help get them filled?

If these subjects interest you, come to our meeting Wednesday, starting at 7 pm, at 167 Holland Street (the Tufts Administration Building, about 5 minutes' walk west from the Square). This is also a good opportunity to meet your new Ward 6 Alderman, Rebekah Gewirtz. Hope to see some LJ'ers there.

The Davis Square Task Force has been around since the late 1970s, when it was first organized to deal with the Red Line extension's impact on the neighborhood. However, it's had a low profile and low attendance in recent months. This posting is a pitch for some new folks to get involved.
