I'm looking for a good optometrist in Davis Square and surroundings. An eye-related issue has arisen and I actually need an appointment for today. Does anyone know of a good one? Any I should avoid? Thanks!

This isn't in or about Davis but it's a rare event that may be of interest to the digerati here.

Toshio Iwai, a world renowned media artist, has agreed to give a talk at the Media Lab on Friday, August 4th, from 4pm-5:30pm in Bartos (that's downstairs from the List Center)

I received the following announcment from a Porter Square mailing list. Note that this is the "old" Pemberton Market at Mass. Ave. and Rindge Ave., not the "new" Pemberton Farms at Mass. Ave. and Day Street.

North Cambridge Stabilization Committee will address this project at their August 9 meeting. (2050 Mass. Ave, 7 to 9PM)
---------------------------------
The property owners hope to demolish the one-story Pemberton Market & Liquors building and replace it with a four-story structure that includes enclosed parking for 15 vehicles. The retail market would occupy the new ground-floor storefront, and the upper floors would consist of 15 one- and two-bedroom condominiums.

Consultant Linda Haar (formerly chief planner for the Boston Redevelopment Authority) will join us to present the proposal and take questions and comments. As currently envisioned, the project would be denser in terms of the number of condos, more massive in terms of floor space and height setbacks, and taller than city zoning regulations allow without a hardship variance.
---------------------------------------

Here's a link to the project Web site, which is still under construction.

I found a set of keys on the sidewalk on Powderhouse Blvd last night. Anyone know whose they are? They have a shoe that says "I love Brad" on them. You can reply to this post if you know.

Thanks!

Hello!

I'm moving into the area this weekend and need to buy a bed. Any recommendations for places that you've had good luck with in the Cambridge/Somerville area that deliver?

Thank you!

Around 12:15, I encountered a bunch of LaRouche Jugend in front of the Holland Street T entrance.

Ugh.

(Maybe this happens regularly, and this is just the first time I saw them here?)

I'm an NSTAR Electric customer, as I'm sure are many of us. This winter I looked into competing electric suppliers, identified four via NSTAR's website, and called them all. They all said they were not offering residential service, though 2 or 3 said they were planning to and I should call again in the Spring.

Today when I went to that link (based on the "Rate A1-Residential" keyword on my bill), I found only one competitive supplier, Dominion. They said they had had an offer out for new residential customers, but it's now closed.

Does anyone know of other options for us? We're interested to know about any cheaper and/or greener alternatives to NSTAR.

Also, there's a house on Highland Road with a bunch of solar panels on the roof which gets us thinking about solar sometimes -- can anyone recommend a vendor thereof, or a good starting point? I doubt we're up for much of a DIY component, but we should definitely look at the economics of a full installation deal. Running the meter backwards would have a nice feeling to it as well. :-)

Thanks!

Amnesty International is asking people all over the world to hold vigils this coming Monday, calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East. One of these will take place in Davis Square, starting at 6 pm this Monday.

The official vigil announcement )

(This is not a political event and definitely not an anti-Israel event. Please respect this if you attend.)
