Groundwork Somerville Mission Statement
Groundwork Somerville strives to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment through the development of community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being.
Groundwork Somerville is a community-based organization designed to serve as a catalyst for reuse of former Brownfield sites and for community revitalization in Somerville. The organization is an affiliate of Groundwork USA, a network of organizations created by the National Park Service and modeled after the successful network of 43 Groundwork organizations in the United Kingdom. Groundwork Somerville is one of a small number of organizations nationwide that have received planning and startup grants of $100,000 from the National Park Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Media and Public Relations Intern
Groundwork Somerville is currently seeking a Media and Public Relations Intern who is interested in working with an environmentally focused organization in Somerville. In this position, you will work closely with the Executive Director, the Board of Directors and the Gardens Coordinator to publicize the organization’s events and programs, write press releases, prepare and distribute flyers and educational brochures, along with various other projects related to getting the word out about Groundwork Somerville. In addition to the above mentioned publicity work, the primary responsibility of the Media and Public Relations Intern will be to create the annual newsletter. This job will entail the following:
Contacting possible financial partners to sponsor the newsletter
Enlisting volunteers and staff to write articles on their experiences with GWS
Obtaining biographical information on the Board of Directors and staff for publication
Managing all creative aspects of the newsletter
Fostering partnerships with area businesses and organizations for distribution of the newsletter
Although an interest in public relations, media relations or publicity is helpful, extensive experience is not necessary. The most important characteristics of an applicant include a desire to be involved in the Somerville community, an interest in working for social and environmental change and an aspiration to gain experience in the environmental field.
Qualifications:
Good oral and written communication skills
Creativity and thoughtfulness
Ability to work in a group and independently
Capacity to work within time constraints
Experience with graphics, computer design, Microsoft Publisher
Initiative and resourcefulness
The Media and Public Relations Intern should expect to spend several hours at least two days a week in the office and attend all weekly staff meetings (8-15 hours a week). Time commitments are flexible. All internships are unpaid (although work-study is an option).

Garden Education Intern
Interested in gardens-based learning? Teaching youth about healthy food? Connecting children to the earth?
The ideal candidate has strong communication and organizational skills, experience working with children and/or gardening, and is available at least 6 hours including one afternoon (M, T, Th or F) from 2:30-6pm during the school year, starting in January or March.
Learn all aspects of a non-profit, public school garden program in Somerville, Massachusetts. Intern responsibilities can include…
• teaching in the garden & curriculum development: assist garden coordinators with developing and teaching after school garden activities which integrate concepts from science, math and nutrition curriculum for 4th- 8th grade students.
• fundraising & development: assist with grant research; help organize outreach and fund raising events.
• volunteer coordination: assist school garden coordinators in recruiting and training volunteers to help care for the school gardens.
• publicity : share seasonal garden highlights and events through newsletters, websites and press releases.
Groundwork Somerville internships are unpaid; however credit can be arranged pending approval of your educational institution, and/or, if you are eligible for community service work-study, stipends can be arranged.
Groundwork Somerville (GWS) coordinates nutrition learning gardens at four Somerville public schools. An independent, tax-exempt organization, GWS creates and maintains schoolyard gardens as a learning resource and as a catalyst for increasing food, agricultural and health awareness for urban youth. We work closely with Food Service staff, teachers, parents and other project partners to share resources and the fun!
