Fri - Sun Oct 5 - 7 Davis Square

"Last October, for the first time ever, a dozen honk bands from around the country gathered in Davis Square to meet, perform and hang out together. It was a blast! So we're doing it all over again this coming Columbus Day Weekend, October 5-7, 2007. This time around, we are honored to welcome The Original Big Seven Social Aid & Pleasure Society from New Orleans. We are all looking forward to learning from their decades old tradition and rocking to their music in the streets. We've also planned a parade, workshops, and lots more honking in the Square. There'll be more music, more bands, and plenty more fans to help us party in the streets. Hope to see y'all there!"

Lots more details here:

I'm hoping to find some over-the-top ornate, fancy pastries for an event. Something along the lines of the dessert spread in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. I'm hoping for pastel petit fours, perhaps some marzipan fruits, and anything else that is pretty, pretty, pretty. I'll go anywhere in the greater Boston area - within 20 miles or so. Thanks!

If you, like me, live somewhere near Josephine Ave and are presently not asleep because of the unholy, unidentifiable noise emanating from it:

It's sewer construction.

Yes, it's sewer construction at ten thirty at night. Apparently this work cannot be done during the day because there's more sewage in the pipes.

No, the police (whom I just called because, wtf) can't tell me how long it's going to last. I can call DPW and ask them, but they're not open at 10:30 at night.

The police assure me that someone in city hall authorized this, ergo they're not going to do anything about it. I can call my alderman, which sounds like a VERY GOOD IDEA. I'm half-tempted to call him right now, but probably that's because I went to bed an hour and a half ago and am not yet asleep, which makes all sorts of socially unpleasant things sound appealing.

If you're wondering why you never got notification that bizarre noisy work would be happening in the middle of the night, gosh! So am I!

As usual, I didn't take extensive notes, but here's what I remember. (Agenda here.)

ExpandDARBI (Davis Area Resident-Business Initiative) )

The traffic study group is focusing on Willow Avenue, between Elm St. and Highland Avenue. You can read more about their work at http://willave.blogspot.com .

One Davis Square, with CVS and Boston Sports Club, should be open by November.

Nobody quite knows what's going to happen to the former Enterprise rent-a-car site at Summer St. and Cutter Ave.

ExpandBurren's 2 am license )

The Y-Not Variety store, at Willow and Morrison, has applied for a license to sell beer and wine. They have 130 signatures of support from customers. The store will continue to close at 8:30 each night.

The Buena Vista garage repair is nearly complete. The garage will close one more day, Friday October 12, to finish the work.

Next meeting will probably be Monday, December 3.
