Bike Theft

As a warning, bike thieves are afoot.

Someone, I'm assuming two people, broke into our screened porch on Day St last night between 1am and 8am and stole two mountain bikes. Considering they moved my new hybrid out of the way to get to the two old, scratched up mountain bikes it was leaning against, I'm betting the thieves were either idiots or very savvy, as my bike was the only one that was registered.

Police was notified and unsurprised.

Figured I should tell you guys to keep a vigilant eye out for assholes.

Hello hello...

We just moved into the area from NY and are looking to get both car insurance (though we'd rather keep our cheaper NY insurance... boo MA prices!) and renter's insurance. I looked back through older entries that were tagged with insurance but there wasn't anything all too recent so I thought I'd come asking for any advice anyone might have--especially with the change in recent laws for car insurance.

We are both 23 and unfortunately have both had a couple tickets on our driver's histories so we don't have perfectly clean driving records (though I'm almost to 3 years with no new points on my license). We will both be using the T to get to work/school so are hoping to get some low mileage/public transportation use discounts.

We'll probably try to shop around a bit but so far have been looking at Amica, Arabella (someone recommended Wedgwood-Crane & Connolly on another site?), and perhaps Plymouth Rock (as I know they have public transit & low mileage discounts).

Thoughts/advice/opinions? Anything that might be of help on both companies and specific agents would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Apparently there was a Smash N'Grab in front of my place somewhere between 6pm and 10pm on Highland Ave. I'm about 6 houses down from the Kickass Cupcakes.

The person's car had a guest 3-day guest pass on it. I was in the living room awhile between 8:30pm-10pm and didn't hear anything outside, then my neighbor knocked on our door to ask if we saw anything. Since I didn't hear any loud breaking of glass, I'm guessing it happened around 6:00pm-8pm or so.

I remember a bunch of posts about people's cars getting broken into during the winter. Just a friendly reminder to tell your guests parking on Highland Ave to remove their valuables from the car.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a quality HVAC person/company? At the very least, I need to determine if splitting a 1-zone system into a 2-zone system is a cost-effective solution. At most, I'd like them to actually do the job, too. :)

If you have some useful information, leave a comment or email me at the address in my profile. Thanks in advance!

Activities and events at the Somerville Community Growing Center on Vinal Ave and Summer Street are in full swing for the summer season, and Saturday, June 14 will bring live music for all ages from 7-9 p.m.

Somerville-based three piece band so+so will take the stage at 7, with their unique lo-fi, high-energy, lyrical pop sound. Following so+so will be local singer-songwriter Bill Trudell, featuring Captain Easy Chord. Trudell’s original power pop tunes have been described as “Hank Williams meets the Velvet Underground by way of the Beatles.”

According to Friends of the Community Growing Center member Candy Leonard, “The Growing Center is a little Eden in the middle of the most densely populated city in the northeast. We are hoping that events like this will make more people aware of this amazing space, and with that awareness will come more energy and community engagement.” Built by local residents and maintained by volunteers and the city of Somerville, the Center offers environmental education and cultural performances throughout the year.

The June 14th event is a fundraiser for the Growing Center, with a suggested donation of $5 and/or light, easy food to share. Raindate will be Sunday, June 15th from 2 – 4. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. For more information call Erin at 617-368-0861. thegrowingcenter.org.

Hi neighbors,

So has anybody heard Crazy Angry Cell Phone Man in the area near the library on College Ave? I've never seen him - he only comes out at night and I can never spot exactly were he is - but maybe every month or so it seems he camps out around the West Somerville library, having loud phone conversations. (At least I hope they are phone conversations because if he was talking to a real person I don't think they would live to tell the tale.) Based on his very loud and angry conversations, I am guessing he is going through or divorce or is otherwise having lady troubles and is very angry towards his ex-spouse/sig-other. The meat of his conversations usually consists of his detailing the various ways of how he is going to maim & hurt this other person on the other end of the phone. One method he outlined involved taking a bicycle and bending it such that... well, I'll spare you the details.

I haven't heard him in a few weeks now, so I'm pre-emptively posting this since I'm expecting him to come back out any day now. That he does this habitually (I've heard him 3 times so far in the past couple months) is rather frightening to me, especially given the content of his conversations. The last time, I shouted out my window at him once to say I was calling the police and while he continued his angry shouting, he soon afterwards shut up for about 45 minutes after which he started back up again. I called the police at that point, but I don't think they ended up coming out to investigate.

Assuming it's not quite as sweltering tomorrow, I'm thinking about checking out the farmer's market. Anything I should know? I've never been (to this one) before. Anything to check out or avoid specifically? Is it worth trekking over from newton? (I have the day off tomorrow and will be local in 2 more weeks, and I'm curious!)
