I received this in the mail from Bob Trane.  Is Carl Sciortino really the recipient of "thousands of dollars from lobbyists, special interest groups and powerful politicians" ?

If so, it's curious that in my neighborhood the Trane yard signs, stickers and posters outnumber the Sciortino signs by a margin of roughly twenty to zero.  You'd think Carl might want to spend some of those thousands on visibility though perhaps he's saving his money for the stickers.

Can anyone comment on this mailer?  Does anyone have any opinions about the race itself?

Tomorrow - Wednesday, August 27 -- is the last day to register to vote for the September 16 state primary.

City election departments are open tomorrow until 8 pm to accept registrations. In Somerville, go to City Hall at 93 Highland Avenue. In Cambridge, go to the Election Department at 51 Inman Street. In Medford ... I assume you go to Medford City Hall, but I'm not 100% positive.

Contested races I know of on the September Democratic primary ballot:
  • US Senate - John Kerry (incumbent) vs Ed O'Reilly
  • 34th Middlesex State Rep (parts of Somerville and Medford): Carl Sciortino (incumbent, but not on ballot; you must use a sticker or write-in) vs Bob Trane
  • 29th Middlesex State Rep (part of Cambridge and Watertown): Blank ballot as a result of Rachel Kaprelian's resignation to become Registrar of Motor Vehicles. All candidates are running sticker campaigns.
  • 35th Middlesex State Rep (parts of Medford and Malden): See [livejournal.com profile] cos's separate post for more information on this race.
To my knowledge, there are no other contested races on Somerville, Cambridge, or Medford Democratic ballots, and no candidates at all on Republican or Green or Working Families ballots. (If I'm wrong, please comment below.)

Nearest Auto-Parts store to the square?

edit: autozone on Mystic is the closest I can find/google/think-of. Anyone? Bueller?

After a fair bit of scouring in the archives, I regret that I found nothing related to my question, so:

At what level of visibility would an artist earning money/tips for (temporary) henna tattoos in davis square plaza start getting into trouble?* I imagine this would go also for musicians. I am not good enough or interested enough to set up even a blanket. However, while I was doing a tattoo for a friend --we happened to be sitting on the metal tables by JP Licks, which I can't imagine would be a problem-- a passerby was politely interested and might well have gotten one if I had encouraged her. It would be fun, after all, to draw for tips! I could imagine being out there several nights a week, drawing sketches on paper, accepting the occasional passerby for a tattoo, earning coffee money, but then maybe I'm on crack.

I am aware of the health and allergy concerns of doing this kind of work, and I'm not qualified yet to offer this service "professionally" to the public at large, but I wondered what level of organization/regularity constitutes the need for some kind of permit. I participate in ArtBeat for other art, and realize that we can't all be hawking our wares all the time, or the pleasantness of the square would be somewhat diminished. So maybe it's a bad idea socially.

Thanks!

So it's 6:20 and there has been no sign of a postal carrier at my house on Francesca. Has any one else been left mail-less this far today?

We've got another nearby contested Democratic primary nearby that Ron didn't mention in his post reminding us that Wednesday, August 27th, is the voter registration deadline for the primary. This race is in the rest of Medford, the parts that aren't in Carl Sciortino's Medford/Somerville district.

All three of them answered the Progressive Democrats of Somerville questionnaire, although PDS ended up choosing not to endorse (I wasn't at the meeting but I remember some people saying PDS should focus on the important race in Somerville and not put its resources into a Medford-only race this time) : Paul Donato, Patrick McCabe, Jim Caralis

... my opinion:

Summary: Donato is too conservative, and voted to ban gay marriage. Patrick McCabe is the best progressive challenger, and the most likely to win. I support McCabe. (more detail... )
