On Mass Ave, across the street from the Porter Square station, there is a stand-alone 24 hour convenience store called Gourmet Express. Well, it used to be simply a convenience store. Then they started making sandwiches. Followed by a really nice pizza oven. And they put in some griddles. Plus some tables to eat at. Without getting rid of the convenience store goodies (including English candy bars and gummy root beer). But can such a hybrid actually have good food? The answer is "oh hell yes!"

Today my companion and I decided to head over there for breakfast. For not much money we got rather a lot of real food ($6-8 will get you a heaping breakfast plate, omelette with sides, or a real breakfast burrito with salsa) and it was all extremely tasty. As my companion said, "IHOP is now dead to me." Why would you go for more expensive mediocre food when you can have real pancakes with real maple syrup and plump juicy sausages and eggs as you like them, with damn fine home-fries and melon to boot, just around the corner 24 hours a day? They also have pizza and sandwiches and Mediterranean foods (including falafel, which I can't wait to try). They are going to be renovating soon (planning on being done by September) to make more space for diners, but in the meantime it's a nice cozy place for a good meal. I highly recommend making the trip and giving them a try, because being able to get good food after midnight around here is too awesome to not support ;).

On the porch we have for free:

One handmade Lidded hamper (from Bangladesh apparently)
http://www.tenthousandvillages.com/lidded-hamper

This storage unit from Ikea (with on plastic basket but can hold more)
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00063672

A horizontal storage unit/bookshelf of the same style (couldn't find picture at Ikea.com)
with two small baskets that has all the pieces to hang on the wall.

Also a west elm floating shelf. Decorative only for displaying "whimsical" items -- really can't hold up books. http://www.westelm.com/products/w509/?pkey=cwall-shelving

Jewelry making items/beads/string etc. including hooks for earrings.

All in great condition, but just don't need them anymore.

Come and get 'em!

I'm sorry to have to report this, but the new Tuft's Convenience Store in Ball Square has been having very bad luck with their freezer system, and as I suspected I might, I got a pint of ice cream that had definitely been melted and refrozen. I didn't return it, just threw it out, because I felt bad for their woes and also didn't feel confident that I could clearly explain why refrozen ice cream isn't acceptable, but I really should try, I know. Some of the other frozen foods appeared to be frozen into squashy shapes, suggesting the same.

Everything on the regular shelves is fine, I'm sure, and they're working hard to do a good job. But you might want to avoid the ice cream until you see what looks like a new shipment in. That's what I'm going to do.

I wonder if they know that those glass tubes with the mini roses in them at the checkout counter are crack pipes. =0

I am thinking of getting a nexus 1 with t-mobile, can anyone tell me what kind of coverage I can expect in and around the square?
