2 Davis Deals today:

$10 for $20 at Orleans at Groupon.

$15 for $30 at Pescatore at CoupMe (it's the little Italian place in Ball Square, just by Kelly's. Since moving this way I've looked forward to trying it, so yay).

There is a referral code for new business in the Groupon link; CoupMe asks that if you'd like referral credit to go to someone, you enter their email address; mine is thespian at sleepingcat.com.

(for those who know I had issues with CoupMe, they have followed through on cleaning up their customer service since, and I feel ok recommending them again. Should you have issues, I have the CEO's phone number and an open invite to call him if there are any issues - let me know!)

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 13th, is the deadline to register to vote in Massachusetts in this year's election.

If you already registered and haven't moved since then, you don't need to register again. You can download a national voter registration form here. I posted with some more information, including answers to some common questions, on [livejournal.com profile] baystate.

Among the things on the ballot this year is a tax-slashing question that would cut state revenues by about $2.5 billion - which would probably cut local aid, leading Somerville to extend all parking meters 'til midnight and charge one quarter per ten minutes, leading to many posts on davis_square :)

i realize that this is a bit of a long shot, but: i'm wondering if anyone in the Davis area has one of those aluminum + plastic webbing lawn chairs that i could borrow for the cold winter months. i need one for a painting i'm working on, and they're shockingly hard to come by (dear god, they're listed as "vintage" on ebay!!!)... If anyone has one they wouldn't mind lending me for a few months, i'd be really grateful and would bake you something yummy for your trouble! P.S. i promise to return any lent chair sans paint. Thanks everyone!

What with winter coming up, and the tax credit for energy efficient windows about to run out, I thought now might be a good time to look into replacing some of my leakier windows. I was wondering if anyone on DS has done this and can make a recommendation.

I have a good contractor already, but I thought I'd look into someone who specializes in windows. So I'm really only looking for someone who has that as a focus.

Second Chances, Somerville's local nonprofit clothing donation program, was nominated by supporters and then selected by local judges for awards in TWO categories in the regional round of StayClassy's 2nd Annual Classy Awards - Small Charity of the Year and Charity of the Year.

We need all the votes we can get to proceed to the national round and compete for cash and prizes - all of which will go to helping others in our community as they take the first steps toward positive change in their own lives.

So, Davis Square friends, please:

~ VOTE for Second Chances in BOTH categories: Small Charity of the Year and Charity of the Year

~ HELP Second Chances get even more votes by encouraging your friends, family, colleagues and social media networks to vote for us as well!

Please help us win one of the top prizes, so that Second Chances can support more homeless and very low income people in our community who need free clothing, and they can take the next steps toward a brighter future.

I've been tweeting and posting to our networks, but to be successful, we really need our friends and supporters to vote and leverage their social networks as well.

Follow us on Twitter »
Or on Facebook »
Or at www.secondchances.org »

Since 2005, Second Chances has been providing free clothing to 400 homeless and low income people in Somerville and Cambridge every year. We work through a network of local nonprofit shelter and service providers to efficiently deliver clothing, shoes, accessories and gift cards to their clients.

Thank you!

Hello Neighbors!

My name is Katie and I write a daily column called 'About Town'  for Somerville.Patch.com. I am reaching out to all of you, to ask if you would share with me your story ideas, tips, events etc. 'About Town' in Somerville.

I am looking to make my column unique. I  would love to hear directly from others in Somerville, whom I don't have the pleasure to know yet, about who and what  in the community you all think should be covered in the column. I have some guidelines steering me, but I also want to tell the un-told stories of those in our community, whether it be a neighbor, a local barista, a talented artist, or even the crossing guard that helps your kids get to school safely each day.

So, talk to me and tell me your ideas! Or send me an email at patch (dot) kl @ gmail (dot) com

Thanks so much!

Warmly,

Katie

I've just left this outside on the curb, near 9 Charnwood Road (just off of Willow). It mostly works, but has some issues. 1) when running DVD video through it, the images doubles, with the left and right halves of the screen showing the same image. 2) sporatic loud pops in the audio when watching a DVD or TiVo, especially after fast forwarding.

If all you want this for is audio (CD player, radio, etc.) is works great! It's video devices that are problematic.

Here's details on this model.

UPDATE: We just saw the recycling truck guy read the note I'd left with the receiver and then put it in his cab!

The storefront of Baker Travel at 407 Highland Ave. (next to Comicazi) is vacant, with a For Lease sign. I don't know how long ago they went out of business, or whether they just moved somewhere else. Edit: They moved to 15 Salem Street in Medford.
