Cooking Essentials: Spices and Oils
Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM (ET)
Artisan's Asylum, Somerville

Do you eat a lot of expensive pre-cooked meals or restaurant suppers but want to learn how you can save money cooking for yourself? Are you a home cook who enjoys cooking but feel your food is too bland? Have you ever wondered about the differences between vegetable oil, canola oil, sesame oil and extra virgin olive oil? Then this class is for you! This class is about learning basic differences between various oils, spices, sugars and salts, including when to use them and when to leave them out. You will get to evaluate dozens of different spices and oils and see which ones you like. There will not be any actual cooking during this class so you can leave your aprons at home, but there will be basic introductions as to why certain foods are cooked in certain ways. Tips, tricks and handouts will be included, as well as suggestions for good local places to find what you're looking for.

Price: $40.00 plus $1.99 fee - but this includes materials.

(Note: If you know his LJ name, please don't use it here. Thanks.)

I've heard that instances of bike theft in Somerville/Cambridge (hereafter Somerbridge) is lower than in Boston. However, I haven't seen actual statistics to back this up. I spent some time googling to no avail.

Does anyone know of any statistics (and comparative statistics) on bike theft in the greater Boston area?

Parts and Crafts is running a workshop this weekend!

Saturday, May 28, from 11-2 p.m., we're running our second ever CSE build party. In keeping with last month's workshop, we will be focusing on glassware and "things that can be made out of the Streetbeest" -- so, optical devices and siege weapons! We hope you'll come out and join us.

Workshop is free for anyone picking up a CSE -- otherwise, it's a $10 suggested donation. We'll also have some extra kits for sale at the workshop for anyone who's interested in the CSE project and wants a full kit to take home.

What: CSE build party
Where: Parts and Crafts, 155 Powder House Blvd.
When: Saturday, May 28, from 11-2 p.m.
Cost: $10 suggested donation
RSVP: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1708392849

What's a CSE? You can read all about them here!
