There are still a few spots available on theMOVE's upcoming weekend work trip to Bay End Farm in Buzzards Bay.

This is an amazing invitation to visit the home and farm of Kofi Ingersoll and Erin Koh!  Two days out of the grind, getting into the farmwork, eating crazy-fresh meals right off the land, hanging out with amazing people.  It's an unforgettable + unique experience, and a lot of our past weekend participants have said it was the highlight of their summer or year.

Trip Fee: $80 for nonmembers, $70 for members.  Includes transportation (via carpool), accommodations (including tents if you do not have your own), and meals.  Half-scholarships are available for those unable to afford the full trip cost – please email Erica at erica@getoutma.org to request one.

Camping: We will be camping at the farm, which has access to a restroom, a shower, and drinking water. We’ll sleep in in double/quad tents.

Signup: We’d love for you to join us. For more info and to sign up now, please visit our Trip Registration Page. If you have any questions email Erica at erica@getoutma.org.

ETA: I am asking about our legal rights as tenants, though we much appreciate the pest control recommendations too. Thanks!

For the last month or so, we've had squirrels in the walls and ceiling. The landlords finally sent someone to patch the hole under the eaves when the squirrels were out, though it took weeks for the guy to come. We're not sure if the hold-up was him or the landlords.

Two days later, after a lot of angry chattering outside and lots of chewing sounds, the squirrels came back. We called the landlords again, and they sent a second guy. The first guy was a general handyman. This second guy was something like the brother's sister-in-law's friend. The landlord didn't have his phone number and the guy didn't have ours. Apparently the message had to go down the chain of relatives. We sat home all Saturday waiting and he never came.

Yesterday, he finally came and patched up the hole again. He said squirrels went out in the day and now they couldn't come back in.

Well, an hour after he left we hear frantic scrabbling in the walls and near the hole. Turns out a squirrel WAS still home and couldn't get out.
The saga continues... )

Got this as an e-mail and robo-call last night. I live on this street and often walk at night, so this strikes pretty close to home.
-------
This is Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department with an important public safety message for residents in your area. At approximately 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a 28 year old woman was assaulted as she walked in the area of Orchard Street. The victim was grabbed from behind and indecently assaulted before she screamed, apparently scaring off the suspect. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction.

The victim described this suspect as being a white male, 30-40’S, average build (but strong), 5-07 to 5-09, sporting a dark scruff or beard that had some gray in it. He was wearing a dark hoodie (hood up), blue jeans, and dark colored shoes (not sneakers), and he had two rings on fingers on his right hand. Very importantly, the suspect had strong body odor.

Anyone who has information about this incident, or the identity of this suspect is urged to contact Somerville Police at 617 625-1212, or text SPD617 to Tip411.

As always, we urge residents, particularly women, who may be walking alone at night, to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. For your safety, you should avoid wearing headphones or earbuds and keep your cell phone readily available.

The police department has increased patrols of both marked and unmarked cars in this area. If you see anyone or anything unusual, please call 911 immediately. Thank you.

I went to Paddock Pizza in Somerville on Sunday (not usually open Sundays, but there was an event) and I loved the pizza (plain). When I told one of the owners, she said she enjoyed it, too, but the first pizza chef, no longer there, got some bad reviews on Yelp and asked if I might be willing to put in a good one. I would in theory, but I'm not always much with the food review writing. Since I like their pizza and want them to stick around and keep serving it, I am willing to take someone who likes writing such things. (Their pizza is also pretty inexpensive, more so from 4 to 6pm (early bird specials), though they are only open Wed-Sat, 4-10pm). Message me if you are interested and are flexible-ish time-wise.

Does anyone know if there are any liquor or import stores around here that carry perry? Alternatively, going beyond the bounds of Davis Square, are there any New England orchards that make it?

ETA: Specifically, either the true British perry, or a local variation.

Anyone know what happened to them? They were still in business in August, but were planning to move. However, they seemed unsure of where they were moving to. They don't answer their phone, and their website is out of date.
