Sorry to pass on more bad news, but I just got this from the Porter Square Neighbors mailing list:

A tenant living on Blake Street was mugged last night* at approximately 9:50. (Blake is the short street between Orchard and Mass Ave with the fire house on one side and the gas station on the other side). He was walking down Blake Street toward Orchard pulling his suitcase and a backpack when (I believe several men) grabbed his backpack, punching him in the face. They ran off toward Orchard Street. Many of us heard his screams for help and called police who arrived shortly and several cruisers combed the neighborhood for the guys.

If any of you find a backpack in your yards leave it and call Cambridge Police right away. The Police went off in search of the guys but I know sometimes they go through the bags and toss them when done. The victim is a student and his wallet and some important documents were in the backpack.

[* This was Sunday night -- less than 12 hours ago]

ETA 10/25: I've posted an update.

I need some USPS Priority Mail flat rate padded envelopes. I recently discovered that, unlike the boxes and document envelopes, these are not available at local post offices. I have a pack of 15 on the way, but I'd like to be able to send a few things sooner than their estimated delivery date.

Do you already have a pack you can spare for a week or so? I can replace it as soon as the ones I ordered arrive. Thanks!

I need a couple of things done on my house and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations (or names of people to avoid) for contractors for these jobs. First, I need to completely replace my gutters. Secondly, there is a little asphalt path going down the side of the house that's in really crummy shape -- I want to replace it but am not sure with what (bricks, cement, stones?) -- need a contractor to give quotes for the different possibilities.

Thanks in advance!

Former Davis Square resident Heather Albano is pleased to announce the publication of her first novel!

TIMEPIECE is a steampunk time travel adventure about a girl, a pocket watch, Frankenstein’s monster, the Battle of Waterloo, and giant clockwork robots taking over London - no, really - and it was largely written in Davis Square coffee shops!

Download it for your Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Timepiece-ebook/dp/B005QD0TGG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317661582&sr=8-1

Download it for your Nook: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/timepiece-heather-albano/1106037183?ean=2940013366398&itm=1&usri=heather%2balbano

Or download it for pretty much every e-reader format that exists, as well as pdf, plain text, and html: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/93451

It is 99 cents on all platforms.

Beech Street in Cambridge will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, October 26 and 27, for repaving.

This information comes from an electric variable message sign at Beech and Orchard, and from temporary cardboard No Parking signs on the street. The cardboard signs say 7 am to 5 pm only, but the electric sign doesn't mention hours.

(The electric sign also says "WEATHER PERMITTED". Surely they mean PERMITTING? The weather forecast for those two days is not promising, so this could well be postponed)

As someone who regularly bikes on this road, I'll be thrilled to see it repaved. It is boneshatteringly awful right now.

I got a ticket today in Somerville for expired registration.  The danged license plate says "SEP" and today is "OCT".  I'm going to the RMV with a friend tomorrow (she's driving her car) to get the registration up to date. 2 questions for Davis Square:

1. Ticket is for $100.  If I get my registration fixed tomorrow, is there any way I can possibly get the ticket taken off/forgiven/lessened if I show them I fixed the issue ASAP?  Who do I talk to about that possibility?

2. Do I get points on my license for this and the associated raised insurance fees?

I haven't gotten a ticket of any kind in over 15 years.  I feel so dirty!  and Bad!

Note to all: CHECK THE DANGED MONTH ON YOUR LICENSE PLATE AND ON YOUR WINDSHIELD STICKER TODAY!!!!
also: check when your driver's license expires.  It's no fun to get a ticket for something like that which is so easily avoided.

Addendum: I got the opportunity to pay the ticket with the same check used to pay the renewal, so the ticket is paid.  It was NOT a 'Somerville' ticket, it was a MA general ticket, complete with my driver's license info.  So according to what others said below, I'm likely to be surcharged.  Which sux.  So now I likely have 2 points against me.  When does the surcharge pop in?  How many years will I be surcharged for?
