Last night, in a final public hearing, the Somerville ZBA voted 4 - 1 to allow the development at 351 Summer Street to move forward. The decision is not yet posted, but when it is, it will be posted here.

The board allowed all parties to speak for a few minutes each and then stated they'd heard enough before the final vote was rendered.

This means that the VFW currently at 371 Summer Street will be allowed to build a new facility that is completely up to building code, handicapped accessible, and a welcome new home for the veterans. It also means that the condo development will move ahead as well.

Meanwhile, the Dilboy Post has approval to reduce the size of the current function hall to a max capacity of 95 in order to be allowed to re-open. Re-opening should be soon but we have no firm, set date as of today.

That is all. Carry on.

What do all the freelancers, home office folks, and super small businesses do for the holidays? Chances are, with no co-workers to party with, there's little holiday cheer for you. Don't just dress up your dog, come party with us!

If you're in an office of 1 or 2, or if you have no formal office at all, come to this lunch-time gathering to celebrate the end of the year with other area small business owners. This event is open to tiny office and office- less workers from all neighborhoods. Pass the word!

Event is Friday, December 16 at 1 pm in Union Square, Somerville.

Complete cost for lunch is $15.

Bring along a Secret Santa gift to exchange (valued at $5 or less) that represents your business to network and spread holiday cheer at the same time. Could be a mug or a keychain with your logo. Or if you're a graphic designer, maybe bring greeting cards with an image you created.  If you're a carpenter, maybe bring a hammer. Be creative!

The event location is in Union Square, Somerville. Restaurant details will be sent to all those registered before the event.

Anyone know of a local restaurant that serves great fried chicken?

I am hoping to do better than KFC!

There is a proposal for a new charter school in Somerville. The state (DESE) will be reviewing the application for the next few weeks and will possibly grant the charter on February 28th. If granted this charter school will undermine the existing Somerville Public Schools by reducing school funding by nearly $5 million a year, which is almost 10% of the current school budget. This cut in funding will lead to devastating cuts in public school programs, loss of 60 -75 teachers, and potentially closure of an entire school. This would represent a huge set back for public education in Somerville, setting back much of the progress that has been made in our schools in the last 25 years.

There will be a public hearing by the DESE on this on December 14 2011 at Somerville High School. More info can be found at:

This post is a follow-up on this one from yesterday.

I received a response from the city of Somerville (Tom Champion, speaking from his conversation with Deputy Police Chief Upton) regarding why I was asked to hang up from my 911 call to dial the "non-emergency" line.

When I placed the 911 call, the woman asked whether I was just getting home. My response was "I'm already in the house." Not the most eloquent of responses I admit, but it was 3:45am. And apparently that, coupled with "the fact that [I was] calm on the phone" implied that it wasn't an emergency. That begs the question: how should I have been acting if there was a break-in in progress to *my* apartment, and the perpetrator(s) are in another room?

Note to self: scream at the top of your lungs and drop a couple F-bombs when you're on the phone with 911 and being robbed. If you don't scare the 911 respondent, you might scare away the robbers.
