I just checked the MBTA winter website, and public transportation, including the Red Line, is not running today.

Since the T is still down, PICNIC's closing reception is rescheduled to tomorrow, Monday, from 6-8 p.m. (on the
condition that the MBTA is running).

Pie! Brownies! A free gift from Cuppow for the first 25 people in the door! And one hot glorious summer day surrounded by a snowdrift!

Anyone know if Cambridge and Somerville are still doing the usual Monday trash pickups tomorrow?

I haven't found anything on the city websites about it...

From http://www.mbta.com/winter/ :

Limited service will be restored effective 2pm, Sunday, February 10, 2013 on the MBTA's Red, Orange, Blue between Orient Heights and Government Center, and Green Line between Kenmore and Lechmere. Service will run approximately every 20 minutes on each line.

Limited service will be restored effective 2pm, Sunday, February 10, 2013 on routes 1, 23, 28, 39, and Silver Line Washington Street Only. Service will operate approximately every 30 minutes on each route.

No other bus routes or commuter rail will run today. ETA 5:45 pm: The MBTA web site now shows many more bus routes running today, including the 77 on Mass. Ave. and the 89 on Broadway. I don't see any other Somerville bus routes listed, unfortunately.

ETA 2/11/13 1:40 pm: This information is outdated so I'm striking it through. The snow emergency remains in effect until further notice. See this new post.

Just got this as a robo-call and e-mail:

Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with a storm update for Sunday, February 10th. The City's Snow Emergency will remain in effect until Monday, February 11th at 6pm, and the parking ban will continue to be enforced until that time. Vehicles parked in municipal lots will have until 8pm to be moved so that City crews may begin clean up of all school and metered parking lots.

Please remember that residents and businesses MUST shovel the sidewalks in front of your property within 6 hours after the end of a storm or will be subject to fines. Shoveling snow into the street is not permitted. Please also remember to clear vents in your home and exhaust pipes on cars to prevent carbon monoxide and fire hazards. Additionally, please assist the Somerville Fire Department by clearing paths to fire hydrants in your neighborhood to provide access in case of an emergency. We thank you for your cooperation and patience throughout this difficult storm.

Does anyone know where I can borrow, rent or perhaps buy a roof rake? I should probably get some of the snow off the roof before we get more mixed precipitation.

I found a pair of sunglasses on a snowbank while walking home from Davis. Approximate location Grove @ Winslow. They are dark blue or black. They are the type that can fit over your regular pair of eyeglasses -- they aren't clip ons- just have a bigger frame and an extra ridge of material at the top.

They have "solitaire" on each temple.

If they are yours, please let me know? If there is somewhere else I should try posting this, also let me know that.

So I looked out my bedroom window late this afternoon to see who was at the bird feeder in my yard and what my Cirque du Soleil squirrels were getting up to in the snow. Whoa! Instead of the usual mix of house sparrows, cardinals and starlings, there was this guy sitting on his kill just ten feet away. I've had the occasional pigeon here, pecking at drops from the bird feeder, but they are not typical. Have had a pair of mourning doves hanging around recently and I have to admit I am glad it was not one of them (love their call and the weird squeaking noise they make when they take off; also their pair bonding).

This was a bit shocking to see at first – have only seen one hawk here before, and then just on the fly in a failed swooping attack. Have had a few cat kills recently which I have not been so happy about (though not because I think cats should be kept indoors but only that I don't want to be maintaining a honeypot to attract  prey for their amusement). This guy was big, though I guess in hawk-world they are mid-sized but this close he seemed huge – body the size of a football. I tapped on the window and made some noise to try to get him to turn around but aside from a bit of head movement he wasn't going anywhere.

After a while he proceeded to tear the pigeon apart. What was eerie (though not surprising) was the complete absence of any other creatures. Usually there are all sorts of comings and goings but I guess word was out on the small creature network.

And that's the way it is...from this nature preserve behind KickAss Cupcakes.

Hey fellow Davis Squarians! I've had several people ask for photos of the Seven Hills Park sculptures because they can't make it out here on their own. I figured I'd put up some of my best shots, and solicit other people to share their own. I hope this is appropriate!

(I do not know any artists, as I missed both actual sculpting events. Please say hi if one of these awesome things was yours!)

About ten more under the cut )

There are lots more photos in my flickr. If I didn't post a picture of your awesome sculpture, it's probably because I didn't think I got a good enough shot. Hopefully someone else did!
