What can you all tell me about the Rose Institute on Elm St.? I walk by there all the time and I guess I'm not used to yoga places that market themselves aggressively.

I'm looking for decent inexpensive yoga in the Davis Square area so I'd be interested hear any tips.

Thank you!

O2 Yoga has drop-ins for $12 non-students $10 students, and 10-class cards for $100 non-students $90 students. They also have a new-student special that's 2 classes for $15. Mat rentals are $1.

They're at the corner of Cedar and Highland.

A world of no. You don't want anything to do with the Rose Institute. I was sucked in by the cheap introductory massage and trial class a few years ago, and ended up signing up for a class that was a total bait-and-switch. We did very little yoga in the sense that most people mean when they want a yoga class, were told that if we did yoga any way other than the Master Rose way we would irreversibly damage our bodies, were made to sign a contract that we would always remember our props and appropriate clothing and would show up on time... Once a classmate forgot her mat. Master Rose lectured her until she cried and left the room, after which we all had to sit around and discuss how she had "manipulated" us by crying, and how that made us feel.

Sorry for the long post, but it's a cult, basically. Steer clear.

agreed - stay away from Rose

Got a massage there about two years ago with a friend. Bizarre place, bizarre Master Rose. Rose was manipulative; while she was massaging each of us, she tried to both undermine our self-confidence and convince us to sign up for her classes/cult.

There is a sad little book in the waiting room with testimonials, and most of the people in them sound just incredibly vulnerable and desperate. Flee, flee from Master Rose.

Dahn Yoga?

Anyone have stories about Dahn Yoga in Davis? They look... kinda culty. So I was wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience.

Dahn is definitely culty. I had a housemate who was into yoga a lot, and initially hooked up with them, and only figured it out when up came the inveitable yoga retreat, which *everyone* who was *truly* serious about yoga was going to go to, and was going to be rather expensive, and oh, don't worry about how you'll get there, we can get you there in our vans (which means you have no way to LEAVE when they start fucking with your head). They made it into a sort of "if you're really a yoga guy like all of us there's no reason for you not to go on this retreat, and it's not too expensive because you should value your body above all other frivolities you might be planning on using that money for."

A more positive suggestion: I had a great experience with Barbara Lyon (http://www.cambridgehealthassociates.com/barbara.html). She teaches classes in Central Square and also in Union Square; not sure of the times, but you can email her.
