Tonight - Thursday, July 29, I went to Davis Sq. to see the outdoor screening of Vertigo.
During the 2 hour movie, there were at least 40-50 low flying planes overhead. Very difficult to focus on the movie.

Two other evenings this week planes passed over my house at least once every 2 minutes between 4-9pm.

I know they say it's wind dependent, but does anyone know if this is getting more frequent? I think I'll have to move if this is going to be the norm. It's pretty stressful to me and I don't think I can adapt.

I emailed and called in a complaint, but in the past, these haven't really done anything.

I'm in medford and the planes that fly over Davis fly over Medford first. The number of planes flying this path have been getting worse as of late and I think the complaint reporting has gotten worse as well.

Planes were flying over my house Monday night till past midnight and I couldn't sleep because of it. I called to complain and it felt like the guy was just trying to get me off the phone, took the report in under a minute and was off the phone. The speed he was asking questions didn't really give him time to write my answers. He asked if I wanted a report and I said yes -- still no report sent. You may say "Monday, that's not enough time for you to have it in hand" but then where's the one I asked for 2 weeks ago, last month, etc.

I was thinking of contacting Fox25 Undercover to see if the complaint reporting is accurate.. They really shouldn't be policing themselves. But truthfully, who really knows what they do with that information anyway, oh well, another complaint..

It's not fair to not have a choice in this, I bought my 2 family in Medford on a "not a through road" because it's quiet and I enjoy being so close to Davis, Cambridge and Boston. I bought in 2000 and there were hardly ever planes flying overhead and never this low. If it wasn't for the economy, the noise would be lowering the value of my house.

Somebody ought to sue. Airplanes should only fly over poor neighborhoods -- not Davis Square.

And if the lawsuit doesn't work, we should just shut down Logan. There are already perfectly fine airports in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Why do we need one in Boston, too?

isn't it nice to live in your self-righteous world? How would you like to buy a house for a specific reason (how quiet it is) and then have some authority do something that will adversely affect you and a number of communities without a public hearing...

They're always flying over my house, day and night. But no one seems to care and it doesn't bother me. Of course, we're a poor neighborhood, so your strategy is working!

I think the complaints are a part of a lawsuit the city has brought against Massport, FYI.
From: [identity profile] talonvaki.livejournal.com
And so far, we already have the "Airplanes should only fly over poor people" comment, the "the city should sue" comment and the "welcome to an urban environment" comment (along with some butthurt, I'm sure)...and it's not even 10am!

Ok, so now we're only waiting on the petwank, davis_snark post, and the Jesus/facepalm. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
From: [identity profile] shaxxon.livejournal.com
thank you for this!

these noise complaint posts are my least favorite part about this live journal community. the butthurt is godawful.

I was specifically waiting for this. Thanks for starting my evening with a laugh. Now we need a DS LJ Airplane Bingo card and we're all set for a fun evening.

when i lived in austin, the airport was still right in the city, and the nearby neighborhoods were all rented out to UT Austin students, who would sit on their porches drinking beer and having their conversation drowned out every 2-3 minutes (no lie, i visited there) by planes close enough to landing that you could see the details of the landing gear when they flew over the house. sounded a little like that crummy apartment (motel room?) near the El in Blues Brothers...

Welcome to eastern Queens/western Nassau. Not one, but TWO major airports. I remember reading an article, probably in Newsday, about one of the high school soccer teams in the area using the planes to their advantage--they didn't notice the noise, but opponents did and were thrown off by it. It's part of the charm of going to a Mets game. You can hear the planes if you watch the Mets on TV, even.

Based on the frequency of posts to DSLJ about airplane noise, no, it seems random.

Keep a log to find out for sure.

The flight patterns change every so often, so medford gets hit some months and others not.

there have been an increase in activity over our area, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is all cycled through.

hate to be a bit bitchy, but move if it's going to be so anxiety causing for you. teele square you can see the planes and how low, but I never hear anything that will wake anyone up at night.

My boyfriend's house is on the helicopter flight path for one of the hospitals in Lowell and is right near a park where they stage medevac flights to the Boston hospitals. He also gets various Air National Guard planes flying very low overhead. I notice the noise from all of those more than I notice airplane noise in Somerville, maybe because it's just quieter in Lowell altogether.

I think one of the reasons this hits a nerve is that every so often (3-4 months, maybe 6 months) a person newer to the area posts a similar post, so it's a topic that gets hashed and rehashed frequently. I don't think it's specifically you or that you aren't in davis, or anything like that. it's just a topic that comes up often enough that people might feel exasperated (which also might support your claim that it happens a lot....)

I think that if you want to make a noise complaint about this, or join in on a lawsuit concerning airplane noise, you should also call up Homeland Security to add yourself to the No-fly List.

You live 3 miles from an airport. Sometimes there will be a lot of noise, other times there won't. If you lived in the Amazon jungle sometimes you'd be bothered by giant man eating anaconda and swarms of pirahna, but boy it woudl be pretty. Everything has it's pros and cons. I think if you looked objectively at what living near a large airport brings to our area you might learn to forget the noise.

Sometimes a perspective change makes life nicer.

Google Maps says 7.5 miles, using a route that is not quite 'as the crow flies' but is fairly close to it.

I'm very sorry you are experiencing this. I can only imagine how stressful it must be, since my current place is not affected the same way. I'm also sorry so many people here seem to think it's their right (obligation, even) to belittle you for it simply because they are not having the same experience. There is certainly no shortage of studies showing the link between stress and noise and I hope you don't feel like there's something wrong with you for having a normal human reaction.

As a mod, I wish there was something I could do, but unfortunately, this topic brings out the asshat behavior like no other.
