Does anyone know of a good place in the area to get a pedicure? Clean and safe (sterilizing tools between uses, etc.) is my first priority, followed by cheap and skilled. Thanks!
I was a regular at Julie's Nails the last year I lived in Davis. I was always very happy there, and even would go back when I made trips to Boston. I'm still searching for a regular place here in NYC that is consistently as good as they are.
However, I was just there over MLK weekend, and had, truly, the worst pedicure of my life. It hurt so much, I was almost in tears. The water was too hot, and when I asked her to make it cooler, she didn't. (My friend, at the next chair over had the same problem, but hers actually did change the temperature.) The woman dug into my toes SO hard and didn't even acknowledge that I was visibly wincing the whole time. Then, when she was "massaging" my legs, she did it so hard I had bruises the next day.
Now, maybe she was new, maybe she was having a bad day, and I hate to rule out an entire place based on one bad experience when I'd had so many good ones previously.
I HAD THE SAME GIRL LAST WEEK!!!!! she's a total sadist, i left there totally sore. i thought i was just being a wuss.
except for her, the salon is great. everyone's nice, the manager (owner?) brings you hot tea and cookies while you're getting your pedi, and sometimes they'll have cheesy karaoke videos going on their big flat-screen tv. my girlfriends and i will usually go to joshua tree first for chocolate matinis, so that we're reeeeally relaxed for the manis and pedis. :)
True...no, I wasn't saying that; it's just that only two places were mentioned...asking specifically might get more places named (hey, never hurts to have a reference to a back up salon in case of a toenail emergency!)
If it's the one I'm thinking of (by the furniture store and dry cleaner) they did a horrible job on my manicure the one time I went there. My polish chipped the same day and they filed them really spikey.
there's another place in davis, a bit more pricey but really really good... can't think of the name, but it's across the street from the T and right next to johnny D's. it's a beautiful little place, the owner (who does your nails) takes a lot of time to make the manicure perfect, and she uses burt's bees products!
I got a pedicure there last month (on a lark right before my birthday party) and it was indeed great. The owner is not the only person who works there, though. The woman who did mine was wonderful, however. Great place, beautiful vibe, but yeah, not cheap.
I love Davis Sq. Nails (I think that's what it's called)--they're quick, wicked cheap, and have great cheesy massaging chairs. Never had a bad pedi there, and good fast cheap waxing, too. It's next to Poor Little Rich Girl on highland, just past Blue Shirt Cafe and that dollar store.

Date: 2005-01-31 06:55 pm (UTC)I've been going there a year, and have never had a problem. They're open 7 days, they're open late, they take credit cards, and they are really nice.
I was there last night and told them how glad I am they're there!
