[identity profile] jac6787.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square
I'm a little annoyed that this post didn't work the first time.  Guys, I typed a whole post out, hit submit, and only half of the first sentence showed up.  So let's try it again.

My roommates and I are moving to Somerville in two weeks.  I'm wondering where we can get general information such as when trash is collected/how to get a parking permit for visitors, and that kind of thing.  Also, I'd like to find out what's around in terms of grocery stores/supermarkets/laundromats/pharmacies, etc.  For reference, we're just past Tufts if you're heading down Holland away from Davis.

Sorry about the shitty post before... And thanks for any info!

Calling city hall or visiting the web site should get you some basics like trash pickup information:
http://www.somervillema.gov/

The Traffic and Parking office can help you out with the permit parking - you can reach them through the main city number (311 if you're within Somerville) or get their hours off the web site and stop by in person, since they're on Holland.

For supermarkets, the main ones I can think of are the Shaws in Porter Square, Market Basket on Somerville Ave, and the Whole Foods/Trader Joes at Alewife. And the Food Master at Broadway and 16.

There's another Whole Foods (formerly Wild Oats) on Route 16 just north of Boston Ave, across the Medford line. That's closer to Tufts than the Fresh Pond one.

There's also the (Star market?) across from RF O'Sullivan's.

True, but I can't think of any good reason to go there instead of Porter Square Shaw's if you live up by Teele. (Star and Shaw's are the same chain.)

If you go to www.somervillema.gov and click on the "My Somerville" tab at the top, you can get address-specific information (garbage days, what ward you live in, etc). All the city departments, including T&P (for parking permits) also have pretty good FAQS. And, one of the best resources is calling 311 when you're in the city, as an actual human being can answer your questions (during normal business hours, at least).

And welcome!

It's only one week if you're already an MA resident - two weeks if moving from another state. Still worth getting though!

Pharmacies: CVS on Elm St in Davis Square, Rite Aid on Highland Ave in Davis Square, CVS at Route 16 and Mass. Ave., CVS in Porter Square. Sorry, we don't have any non-chain drugstores anymore.

Laundromats: there are a couple on Broadway in and west of Teele Square. See also the laundry tag.

When trash is collected: type your address into this form.

For smaller-than-supermarket grocers, check out:

Dave's Fresh Pasta on Holland Street (name is misleading, they sell lots more stuff than just pasta)
Farmer's Bounty (fruits and veggies) on Elm Street
McKinnon's Meat Market on Elm Street across from Farmer's Bounty
Sessa's Italian grocery on Highland Ave. in Davis Square
Pemberton Farms at Mass. Ave. and Day Street
Nimah Market at Mass. Ave. and Rindge Ave.

mostly off topic but yeah, whenever i make a blog entry on any site, i always select all & copy before hitting "post" - you just never know with the internet and often it doesn't save most of the draft (even if it says it does).

That's not Tufts

FYI, "heading down Holland away from Davis" won't take you past Tufts.

I used to think that was Tufts when I first moved here, but it's a Tufts administrative building (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=165+Holland+St+Somerville,+MA+02144) about 5 blocks from the nearest edge of the actual Tufts campus (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=13226363224929514329).

You're almost in Teele Square, or between-Davis-and-Teele, but you're not living near Tufts.

Welcome!
