(It just occurred to me the potentially randy reading one could perform on the subject line. Lol!)

Dear Davis Square folks,

I've got various big clunky items sitting around mostly in various storage areas--a couple of dead TV sets, semi-dead stereo set, some furniture, etc. I really want to get rid of anything that can go before my next move and am researching various outfits such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK. (I've tried Freecycle, but this seems to be the sort of thing nobody wants except for professionals who make a living out of recycling rubbish.)

I was wondering whether any of you smart, sassy, crafty individuals have heard of locally based firms that do this kind of thing--and might potentially charge less than the big national firms.

Thanks and Happy Spring (we devoutly hope!)!

Jim's Clean-Up (http://www.jimscleanup.com/JunkRemoval.html) does a fine job. I don't know how their prices compare to a GOT-JUNK franchise.

Can you read their web pages? I can't -- black type is very hard to read against a black background:

<body bgcolor="#000000" text="#000000" link="#0000FF" vlink="#800080" topmargin="0" leftmargin="0">

I'd love to tell them this, but I can't find an e-mail address or contact form on their site either.

Huh--it comes out as text on a white background inside a thick black border for me (using the latest version of Firefox for Mac).

They don't seem to have any email contact options, just the phone numbers.

It looks like you say on Opera and Firefox, but not on Safari and Chrome.

Only partially related to your question- how is the freecycle community here? We have a lot of moving boxes and some furniture that just doesn't fit in our new apartment, and I was pondering posting to freecycle to see if anyone wanted them.

I've seen moving boxes posted to and requested on the Somerville freecycle list fairly frequently.

I don't suppose you happen to have a small armchair that I could reupholster? I'm ideally looking for something that's no more than 36" in each dimension.

Unfortunately no, we're actually looking for one as well. We have a largish entertainment unit that I think we're going to have to swap out for something smaller, and a art/craft desk.

I need to get up the oomph to get photos and get them posted. -.-

Several years ago I put an ad on Craigslist for "free if you'll get rid of it," and a professional recycler took the thing within 24 hours. Maybe do the same, but with an "all-or-nothing" clause?

We Get Rid Of It is local to this area, though not specifically Somerville.

Do you have any experience with them?

No, but I think a friend of mine used them before her last move -- let me ask her.

I used them and thought they were fine.

Sorry, turns out my friend used Got Junk instead.

We've used Earthworm at our office:
http://www.earthwormrecycling.org/

We've only given them things like computers/electronics/cables, and a lot of paper/cardboard, but it looks like they take furniture and stuff, too. Maybe worth a call to describe what you have:

If you live in Somerville, you can put the dead TVs out on your regular trash day. You must call 311 at least 24 hours in advance and tell them you are doing this.
