I cleaned out old files and have a large pile of documents chock full of personal info ripe for ID theft.  It'll take all month with my ailing home shredder.  Is there someplace local I can take these to be destroyed?  Googling found some business services, but nothing useful to me.

Thanks!

Some office supply stores, like Officemax, have a shredding service. Once you get caught up, get a new shredder!

Some UPS stores advertise that they do shredding, such as the one in Arlington Center and the one near Porter Square. Not the Davis Square one, unfortunately, at least not in their online advertising.

If you are a member of a credit union, you could try calling them to ask if they provide this service for members. (usually free)

I usually just bring a folder-worth at a time to my work and put them in the locked bins that get picked up by one of those document service companies. Do you work somewhere with that service? Or have friends who do? (Financial company, insurance, health care).

You could call ESCB and ask if they are doing another event like this one again - http://davis-square.livejournal.com/2624093.html

Or, if you have a cat, you could use the method suggested when throwing away prescriprion medication...tear up the papers and throw them away with used kitty litter (http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm101653.htm).

Nobody's going to want to steal your identity so badly they'll dig through a bag of cat excrement to piece together your information.

The Davis Square one does not do shredding, alas (at least, it didn't a couple of months ago when I asked).

I am planning to haul a bin up to a place in Tewksbury because I haven't found anywhere closer that accepts one bin's worth from individuals, so will be keeping an eye on this topic...

Why are you taking it to Tewksbury instead of to one of the two UPS stores I mentioned above?
