Hi all, My mother (who lives in western PA) has been reading about beach roses and would like to try growing some. Apparently you can grow them from seed if you get some of the rose hips in the fall (no one in western PA seems to sell the plants). She has enlisted me to get some rose hips. Does anyone around here have a beach/wild rose bush that they would be willing to let me cut some rose hips from? Anywhere in the Davis area would be great.
Thanks!

If no one else does, there are scads of them in the parking lot at Porter Square Shopping Center. They are identical to my MiL's beach roses.

I was going to say that, too. There are TONS there, both in the islands in the parking lot itself and along the sidewalk on White Street.

Just be warned, Rosa rugosa are highly aggressive and very thorny plants. They will come up in your lawn and scratch your arms to bits as you try to trim out the copious amounts of dead stems from the center of the patch.

Very pretty and fairly tasty, though! You can find them growing as ornamentals all around town. I just nabbed a rose hip from a rest stop in central MA and I plan to plant some seeds (in a pot!). I would offer you some, but Porter Square Shopping Center and Powderhouse Park (the traffic island) both have them, and that's probably more convenient for you.
