I have a lot of stuff. I want to have less stuff. Anybody have any suggestions about how to get rid of books (of various genres), VHS movies (mostly in good shape, but I won't have a VCR anymore), tapes (ditto - it's just time to move on to new technology), and clothes/shoes (women's size 7-ish, in both clothes and shoes)? Preferably in a way that involves loading up a Zipcar and taking them somewhere, rather than having a yard sale or posting each individual item on Craigslist. Thanks!

The Somerville Public Library (or another area library) might accept a donation of the VHS cassettes. They might take the other books as well, if for nothing but a sidewalk sale or something of the sort (I know the Fox branch of the Arlington library always has a table of books for sale cheap).

Goodwill in Davis or Salvation Army in Ball Square for the clothes and other things (or Poor Little Rich Girl if you'd rather try to consign first)

Poor Little Rich Girl on Highland for the clothes and shoes. Call ahead to see if she'll take them on consignment.

If you have a free weekend day, you might want to still consider a yard sale. I did it two weeks ago and was really surprised at the money I made. I just posted on CraigsList and LJ and people came. It's less work than you'd think, and I got to meet some Davis neighbors. :-)

But you didn't have any theatre geek stuff left! ;-)

I got a tip to try these people. I emailed them, no dice, nothing happened. Never called because I kept forgetting during working hours. But you could give it a try, they SAY they do books and videos.

Also, the Zoots in Porter Square takes Goodwill donations. I've taken some non-clothing things there before, but not a lot as their space is obviously limited. It's a great way to consolidate trips if you're going to be in Porter Square anyway.

Here's an odd query: What's a size seven? I don't know much about women's clothing sizes, but I thought they were typically even numbers.

And you can post just about anything to "reuse@mit.edu" and it'll be snapped up. I've gotten rid of everything from a fake fireplace to spare rolls of wallpaper that way, and it's how I picked up my jukebox.

The odd numbers are Junior sizing, which tends toward shorter builds and younger styling. Even numbers are Misses sizes, which are usually longer and generally cater to more mature styles or professional/career wear clothes. A 7 is near the smaller end of Juniors, though they go down to size 0 these days.

I had no idea there were two alternate size systems interlaced!
I sure am glad that Men's clothing just lists the parameters. Chest, neck, waist, inseam, arms. It seems much simpler.

there's a goodwill truck in arlington at the stop & shop. they're open until 4pm on weekends. they'll take stuff and clothes. they won't take monitors and some other things i forget. but there's a huge sign telling what they do not take.

also, you'll get a receipt right there from the person working at the truck.

i've never dropped stuff at the stores, always at the trucks. they've never refused things i've donated.

Sell used books in good condition (paperback, no outdated computer or travel books) at Harvard Bookstore or Brookline Booksmith. Hardcovers and oddities to MacIntyre and Moore in Davis Sq. or Rodney's in Central Sq.

Consign seasonally appropriate hip/retro/vintage at Poor Little Rich Girl, schmancy or more conservative stuff at Second Time Around in Harvard Sq, and damn near anything at the Garment District (though you've got to wait like a month for an appointment at Garment District now - they all require appointments).

Donate stuff at Goodwill, including books and clothes and videos. Also for the clothes and shoes you could call Rosie's Place or another women's shelter and donate there - sometimes the littler charities get the stuff to people who need it faster.

Good luck!

Especially good for women's shelters are business clothes. There is also a local charity which provides clothes for women who need them for interviews & work, but I cannot find the name of it right now.
