Bally's has a (unearned, in my opinion) bad reputation and is somewhat grungy, but they have a swimming pool and at the cheapest gym that's not the YMCA. If you're willing to buy a contract of some length, they're cheaper than the YMCA. They often try to give you a hard sell-- don't let them force you into buying something you don't want.

Yea, I heard of the reputation, and I think it is smewhat unwarranted. It's perfectly clean. It's no spa, but nor does it feel like a high school gym. The long term contracts are certainly the most attractive.

I don't. Be very careful to check out the terms of the contracts. Often you can't end early without proving there's no way you can get to another one of their gyms, and once you've left, they'll try sending you deceptively "bills" that are actually re-enrollment payments.

Don't believe me? Google "bally's total fitness" and see what comes up.

Now that is true - and has nothing to do with cleanliness. To get the best rates you will need to commit yourself to 3 years. Be careful in that respect.

i agree on all counts:

a.) it is relatively clean, in my experience, and cheap and has lots of good equipment.
b.) they will usually try to get you to sign up for 3 years and, no, you can't end early without proof that you live more than 25mi away from a bally's. (i asked this when i joined up.)
c.) they *will* try to sell you on their gym, so be prepared to stand your ground and not buy more than you want.

and i will add:

d.) they frequently have promotional selling periods. i got my membership for $30 down and $30 a month for 3 years. i recommend that you sign up during one of those times.

I've been a member for 8 years, and my rate is $19 a month. As far as I'm concerned, that's damn near free. So I keep it, regardless of it's little ups and downs.

I've been at Bally's in Porter for a long time. If you know you are going to be around the contract might be worth it. I'm on month by month now @ $47/mo - which is a lot more than past deals I have had with them (had one deal for $100/year). It''s kind of grungy compared to a BSC, etc. sometimes it feels like working out at Part Street station - but it's not nasty.

I've heard good things about healthworks, plus, they have student rates.

i <3 healthworks! particularly the porter square one. i switched up there from the brookline branch, and i am thrilled. the staff is super friendly and nice, and for gyms in boston, it's open late (11pm... which was a switch for me, since my hometown has 24 hour gyms that i miss dearly). rates are reasonable, and they have towel service so you can shower there after your work out so you don't have to stink up the T! also, the place is really clean and well taken care of.

I've taken class at O2 and liked it. They also have student rates. $10/ class with a student ID.

There's also Baptiste Power Yoga on Mass Ave a couple blocks past Porter towards Davis.

How's that yoga place on Holland?
