Our 6 year old water heater IS apparently really a 6 yr model as we need to replace.  The first quote was $2100 which is way more than I pexpected.  Has anyone replaced yours lately and do you have a recommendation or can you confirm a ball park price range? It is a 50 gallon short with power vent if that makes sense to you.
Thanks!

I have a water heater

But from your description I assume you need a "side-venting" heater where mine is a chimney venting unit but we removed our chimney and had to get side-venting units ourselves. As for the quote I assume that is for a new unit to brought to the house, the plumber will drain and remove the unit and install the new unit and new hardware and piping that is required. I have heard quotes anywhere from 900-2500, I do feel 2100 is high. I'm not sure your know-how but you could drain the unit yourself and get rid of it your self ( putting the heater on the sidewalk will most likely get it picked up by a scrapper). Last quote I got a few years back was $1500, hope that helps.

Edit. a higher quote could reflect also a tougher location, where your water heater itself is not located in the basement but maybe in a closet in a more common area

I was just quoted $1,800 for an energy-star-rated power-vent 50-gallon myself.

If the vent is in place that is high. I'm not sure I understand your first sentence. Why do you feel you need to replace it? Usually you just let them die one day (usually manifested with a minor leak and no hot water) and then replace, unless the leak would mess up some finished space.

I interpret the first sentence to mean that a water heater with a 6-year warranty actually died when it reached 6 years old.

I've heard that is not uncommon with water heaters (end of warranty -> sudden death) - unlike the one in my previous house that had a "property of CL&P" (CT Light & Power) sticker on it with a date about 25 years prior to the date I bought the house - and it survived my 14-year tenure. I was told that no one wants to pay what that sort of longevity costs nowadays, but I don't know if that's the issue or not.

Big Blue Plumping - 1900

$1900 from Big Blue Plumbing. Side venting.

They did a good job. Though I was disappointed to find out they installed the least powerful 50 gallon model, replacing a much more powerful 75 gallon. Not only did we loss the volume, but it also re-heats slower. Next time we will be more careful to check what model is getting quoted.

I just had a thought, but haven't researched this at all yet. You might check the MassSave site for rebates on efficient equipment.

If you are replacing something, if you consider a more efficient option sometimes they can help encourage that.

Good
