I know this has been asked before but memories appear to not be working at the moment.

I'm looking for a butcher somewhere around Davis Square...or actually anywhere in the Cambridge/Medford/Arlington/Somerville area.

I'm specifically looking for filet mignon for a special birthday dinner for my boyfriend...

Any recommendations? I already tried Bob's in Medford, but they have to special order it. If all else fails I'm going to go to Whole Foods, but I'd rather go to a butcher.

I'd assume that McKinnon's, Right in davis square would have no problem coming up with a filet. Also they're likely to be the least expensive place to buy it.

Jesus, McKinnon's dear! It's a gross little place but it's where all the restaurants shop (or so I hear). Great prices, great cuts. Not as organic and yum as Whole Foods, but then again, it won't break your wallet either. I don't have any complaints about McKinnon's.

They have an unlisted number. It is 617-666-0888, don't expect the person answering to say McKinnon's either :) I remember the first time I asked for the number and the cashier pretty much told me no. I asked one of the head butchers for it and it's the direct line to the back. The butchers usually clean up and leave around 2pm so you need to call in the morning. They always have filets. The last time I got them there they were a little under 10 bucks a pound.

Interesting, it used to be unlisted. The one that always popped up was for the unrelated store in Everet.

Yes, all the restaurants get their meats there. Even Bob's. There's one in Everett too, and I think that one is bigger than the one in Davis.

They are not related anymore. I can't remember the exact reasons for the split up.

I have never had anything bad at McKinnon's in Davis Sq. They are really cheap and if you talk to the butchers enough they will tell you what to get. I once had them dress up a huge 20 lb. crown roast of pork. They French trimmed it and ground all of the trimmings and cryopacked them for me. The whole thing came to $35 :)

I haven't shopped there myself yet, but Savenor's Market (http://www.savenorsmarket.com/) on Kirkland in Cambridge has an excellent reputation.

Ah and not so excellent prices :) If you are looking for some amazing stuff and do not have a budget that I woould recommend them. I got an amazing 4 bone prime rib of beef for $100 around 6 months ago. It was perfectly marbled and really tasty.

Have you tried Casa de Carne on Bow Street just outside of Union Square?

How can a place called 'casa de carne' be wrong? HOW?

I've got to go see this place. Thanks.

They'd have to go out of their way to fail.

I have never gone in there (mostly out of fear), but I've always been infatuated by "Meatland" in JP.

"Meatland" in Lynn had good marinated steak tips. I admit I went in because the name was so funny - but they actually turned out to have decent stuff.
