Anybody know of a place in the Davis/Porter/Harvard area that provides CD repair services? Do-it-yourself techniques didn't work, CD Spins says they've stopped providing this service, Newbury Comics doesn't do it, and Tower is out of business (if they ever did repairs at all). Thanks.

Optiviti (http://www.optiviti.com/) was the company providing the CD repair service that CD Spins used. They were locally based - here's some contact information from their site:
For more information on becoming an Optiviti member, please contact Arthur Jannakas at
(617) 267-4152 ext. 3 or e-mail at info@optiviti.com
And yes, you can repair a CD.

Optiviti was part of CD Spins.
Art(thur Janakas) (the owner of cd spins) ran the cd repair offshoot out of the CD Spins warehouse near the childrens museum.
Recently Art sold most of the CD Spins locations and rented out the warehouse to someone else. I'm not sure what happened to the resurfacing machines. When I was still working at CD Spins, there was talk of selling the machines to the new owner (who bought JP and Davis) or selling them to a 3rd party. If you didnt get to talk to the new owner at Davis (i'm assuming you asked there) maybe call over to JP?

There are places you can SEND your cds to but as far as i knew we (ahem CD Spins) was the only place in the greater boston area that offered the service.

Speaking of CD Spins, why did they close their downtown Boston store -- but leave it fully stocked for weeks afterwards?

lazy?
ha! just kidding, Art, wherever you are.

he had had the store for so long 10+ years that the rent was still waaaaaaay low. controlled rent down town boston!? say waaaaaaaaaaat? so he didnt want to give up the location. i'm guessing that the cds and whatnot stayed there due to space contraints elsewhere? he still owns Newbury (as far as i know) and i'm sure that store couldnt handle all of DTX's stock.

and fun sidenote: the store that's there now is Art's as well. i think he and his baby-momma set that place up. QUITE a different vibe from the old spins but hey, whatever floats yer boat.

I didn't realize the DTX location had reopened; I'll have to check it out. (But Boston doesn't have commercial rent control.)

I've got no suggestion for where to go, but I just read yesterday that you can repair scratches by using lotion if you put a touch on a soft cloth and wipe from center to outside.
