As most people here have stated, you'll probably spend a lot more money than necessary by taking it to a shop. Most shops will hit you for ~$50 up front deposit for the first hour of time, and ~$50 an hour there-after. Note that that price will vary a good $20 in either direction, and parts are additional costs.
First... shoot a message over to the bostonit community describing your problem. You may get find a simple fix there.
Or... find yourself a geek in your circle of friends. Honestly, as a geek myself, I HATE when I see my friends take their computers to a shop and then hear them complain about how much they paid. Especially when it would have taken me $15 and 5 minutes to fix the problem.
If you really want to take it to a shop, I recommend The Computer Cafe in Arlington Center. ( http://compcafe.com ) I worked there for a while when I shifted back into the IT Industry, so you can tell them "Spud" sent you and they may take care of you better.
I DO NOT recommend Tech Fusion in Fresh Pond unless you have VERY IMPORTANT data on your hard drive that you ABSOLUTELY have to recover. They are good at the several thousand dollar recovery jobs for data on DEAD hard drives. Aside from that, I've found them to screw up a lot and do shoddy work.
