Speaking as an IT pro of 8+ years, 90% of the time chances are you'll spend more to fix it than it's worth. Ask around your friends group, find the geek, and offer to trade a case of beer for an evaluation of what needs fixin. Either they can handle it, or they can help you pick out a new machine.
feel free to take this with a grain of salt, just my opinion.
I think the guy that runs it is a mite bit pushy, but the shop next to Au Bon Pain in the Harvard Pilgrim building has good pricing and he seems to have his head on straight. I got a brand-new CDRW drive for my desktop for $30, which is a tiny bit over Microcenter, but lacking in the hassle.
What inahandbasket said, depending on your problem. If you wanna you can send me an e-mail (livejournal at heliograph dot com) and tell me your symptoms I can give you an idea of what it might cost (no beer required).
If time allows also go to other forums where people discuss computers and see if there is an area relevant to your problem, Tom's Hardware is one place. But again like the previous posts do not spend more than it is worth. Good luck
As most people here have stated, you'll probably spend a lot more money than necessary by taking it to a shop. Most shops will hit you for ~$50 up front deposit for the first hour of time, and ~$50 an hour there-after. Note that that price will vary a good $20 in either direction, and parts are additional costs.
First... shoot a message over to the bostonit community describing your problem. You may get find a simple fix there.
Or... find yourself a geek in your circle of friends. Honestly, as a geek myself, I HATE when I see my friends take their computers to a shop and then hear them complain about how much they paid. Especially when it would have taken me $15 and 5 minutes to fix the problem.
If you really want to take it to a shop, I recommend The Computer Cafe in Arlington Center. ( http://compcafe.com ) I worked there for a while when I shifted back into the IT Industry, so you can tell them "Spud" sent you and they may take care of you better.
I DO NOT recommend Tech Fusion in Fresh Pond unless you have VERY IMPORTANT data on your hard drive that you ABSOLUTELY have to recover. They are good at the several thousand dollar recovery jobs for data on DEAD hard drives. Aside from that, I've found them to screw up a lot and do shoddy work.
Thank you so Much Lizzy for your kind words. We are now WWW.AngelTronicsInc.Com AngelTronics named after my wife. We are now also listed here as AngelTronics as well. Our phone is not correct on your reply so here is the correct number for your advice. 617-996-9270 Call us anytime, for any reason. We wont dissapoint you or your referrals. Thanks again for the wonderfull words! Peter the PCDooctor
Here is what I wrote before with the corrected phone number:
CompuGeeks on Holland right outside of Au Bon Pain is a good place to take it. It looks all home grown and maybe it is to an extent, but I have gotten my computer repaired there and had a good experience. I also referred two friends there who were happy with their service.
They do not charge a diagnosis fee and I thought the prices were totally reasonable. I had initially brought my computer to one of the big chains who told me it was unfixable and to just buy a new one. CompuGeeks fixed mine for about $175 and I was thrilled.
Their number is 617-996-9270. I don't think they have a website, which is odd, but I personally didn't care much about that.
Thats ok Lizzy we do appreciate all the good Karma you seem to be passing arround for us. We have some older software Buy One Get One, if you like for your kind words come by and take one on us! We are happy some customers are willing to spread the word. Tell us what you think of the new site that is being adjusted as we speak. WWW.AngelTronicsInc.Com Thanks again Peter
I would suggest calling Somerville High School. They have a great vocational department, and I know several people who have had computer repair work done after a crash. I don't know what they charge, but it's certainly nominal
I've had good luck with Mark Bildman, who is a computer handyman who comes to your house. It's never taken him more than an hour to fix any of my problems. I've been using him for several years. And it's much easier to not have to lug your computer in to a shop. 617-596-7545 bildman at comcast dot net
As the initiator of this thread, THANK YOU to all of you who responded. My wife went to CompuGeeks in Davis Square. She got same-day service, spent $75, and was delighted that they made her laptop work again -- lots faster and cleaner than it was. She was quite happy with their service.
Peter, from Compugeeks, is now in Ball Square, Somerville. He's removed nasty viruses, replaced hard disks, a power supply. He's saved my bacon more than once.
