Anyone know what the renovations are that are closing Diesel this week?

A friend told me they are putting boths in the front section where tables and chairs are now.

Have the renovations started already?

Yikes, I think booths would be a bad idea. You always get that one person taking up a whole booth to themselves, and then the 3 remaining seats are lost. I suppose it would be okay if they were 2-seater booths, but the tables seemed just fine...

You mean, you get those twelve single people taking up whole booths themselves. :)

That totally bugs me whenever I'm in there looking for seating. I've been in some coffee-houses where management requires people to share their tables if it's busy, and I think Diesel ought to. If I had designed seating in there I wouldn't have gotten those big booths at all. One long padded bench along the entire wall with lots of little tables with a chair all along that. Pack those people in!

*nod* i've always found the people using booths to be perfectly willing to share (and i have been too, on the rare occasions i've been alone in a booth :)

booths seem like a bad idea in the part of Diesel that's next to the open garage door in warm weather.

I would like it if they could somehow figure out how to prevent the back from smelling like sewage. I dunno if it's my Matt Murdock-style senses or what, but the bathroom stench is so bad I've stopped going.

Maybe everybody else is pretending to be Matt Murdock when they use the bathroom, but their aim is bad.

i think it's that it's hard to ventilate the bathrooms (which are in the middle of the building?)

i confess i usually go there before 9am, and things smell fine, so i guess they clean up overnights.

I kid you not, the smell comes from the sulfur used to develop in the photo booth.

Is there anywhere on the web where I can get the information about them being closed? I have a meetup this Thursday that I will have to cancel.

You could just move it across the street to Starbucks.

My beef with Diesel

I really hate the punchcard system. It's like if I want to give to charity put a jar out on the counter with a picture of a CP kid and call it good. What's the incentive for going out of your way to get 10 drinks only to get one dollar off your 11th? That 11th drink should be fuckin' free! I don't think that is an effective way to get decent funds for a charity. If anything it is going to turn people off to the idea of punching their card because what's in it for them besides a pathetic $1 off your drink and money to some supposed charity? It's like they can't be bothered...

Also, I kind of think the charity is bogus in my opinion. I bet the money went to the renovations.

I was there at lunch today and noticed the signs.
Unless I missed it, the question of when they are closed was never answered, so:
closing early Wednesday (4pm)
closed all day Thursday

above person w/meetup should definitely postpone if you haven't already.

I'm short on time living in the area (3 years), but the Diesel of today is not the Diesel that I remember from when I first arrived.

The vibe from the staff is much more put-on, I think, with quite a bit of a "We can't -help- you yet...we're too busy being alt-cool" flavor to it. I don't need a best friend in my barista. The arrangement that I feel comfortable with is a 20 second interaction where I am polite and prompt, and they don't make me feel like shit for not meeting some arbitrary Gen-Y street cred quota.

Money and mouths, though - I've just moved to Grand Prix for my coffeehouse wants.

Gen-Y street cred

What exactly has been the problem with the people at Diesel? When ever I go in there I tell them what I want and the get it for me. Its always brief exchange. Simple, straight forward. FWIW .. I'm a 42 year old guy with no 'Street Cred" :)

This was one of the reasons that I stopped going to Diesel, as well...and I'm 22, so age has nothing to do with it.

I didn't like constantly receiving little sneers as the cashier ascertained that my outfit is just not cool enough when I just want to order a $4 (!) drink. I didn't like the snotty staff member who crashed into my table while engrossed in composing a text message, spilling my hot coffee all over my sandwich and myself, and then threw a roll of paper towels and instructed me to clean up. (For the record, I mopped off my self as best I could and left.) The last time I inquired as to whether or not a certain sandwich contained soy, as I am allergic, I was told that they didn't know and couldn't be bothered to check, and that I was responsible for my own "illness."

Please. Dunk's is cheaper, faster, quieter, and they take debit cards. Diesel lost my business for good, and I tip well and consume more espresso than anyone I know. It's a coffeehouse, not a fashion show.

(Wow, it sure felt good to get that off my chest, regardless of the Diesel-cultist fire storm that it's guaranteed to set off. Sorry, mods!)
