Airplane noise Friday
Jun. 22nd, 2007 11:34 pmSomeone posted a comment that aircraft noise had increased over Davis recently. Today, I was sick in bed and I thought I was going to go insane. An aircraft flew over my house every minute, no kidding, all day long from 5am this morning.
I'd really appreciate it if fellow Davis Square readers who dislike noise especially from aircraft could make a complaint to Logan. Please don't flame the thread if you think airplanes are cute or you simply love noise.
Unless we speak out, even a little, no one will give a damn. I spoke to the airport people and they said they will act and possibly re-route or stagger flight paths but only if they get complaints.
Apparently, ever since a new runway went in, they have received an increase in complaints.

Date: 2007-06-23 05:23 pm (UTC)A long time ago I used to work in a store right next to a Rainforest Cafe. One of the features of the cafe was a rainstorm that would go off every 20 minutes or so. It included a huge animatronic elephant that would roar. It drove my fellow coworkers and me totally insane. Customers would complain about it all the time.
But after about two weeks, we got used to the noise. Customers who didn't have to deal with it all the time would ask, "what's that noise?" and we'd say, "what noise?" We had stopped hearing it altogether. It just became so embedded in our subconscious.
I was home most of Friday and I didn't hear anything. Now that I'm listening, sure, I hear planes. Nothing really loud at all, though... I wonder if the noise is concentrated to a very specific area of the square?
Just something to consider. I don't love excessive noise either, but a lot of it is easy to ignore. Even with the aid of a white noise machine, or even a fan or the radio, just something else to concentrate on so the other noise is blocked out.

Date: 2007-06-23 06:00 pm (UTC)In an urban environment, people are never going to agree on how much noise is too much. I don't hear the planes, but the occasional car with a booming stereo makes me go postal. Regardless though, no urban community can expect non-urban quiet. For that you really need a distantly outlying planned community with enforced regulation of noise (no power mowers, no motorcycles, no cranking stereos, etc). Those places do exist, in case anyone's interested. ;-)
There used to be a boy who practiced his bagpipes in the park at Powderhouse. I adored it and looked forward to it, but he stopped one day and never came back. I hope he just moved, and wasn't driven out because of sound. His music was a real treat (to me, but probably not to everybody, I imagine).

Date: 2007-06-23 06:23 pm (UTC)A car with a loud stereo going by is not equivalent to a jet aircraft from a specific source going overhead every 1.3 minutes from 5am to 1am annoying tens of thousands of people.
