[identity profile] righteousness-1.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square

Someone posted a comment that aircraft noise had increased over Davis recently. Today, I was sick in bed and I thought I was going to go insane. An aircraft flew over my house every minute, no kidding, all day long from 5am this morning.

I'd really appreciate it if fellow Davis Square readers who dislike noise especially from aircraft could make a complaint to Logan. Please don't flame the thread if you think airplanes are cute or you simply love noise.

Unless we speak out, even a little, no one will give a damn. I spoke to the airport people and they said they will act and possibly re-route or stagger flight paths but only if they get complaints.
Apparently, ever since a new runway went in, they have received an increase in complaints.

I sent them a comment. At first I was wondering if this had something to do with open-window season, but just tonight 2 flights rumbled by and were REALLY LOUD and all my windows were shut. I wonder why there's been such an increase lately.

Thanks for the info. I too noticed that it was really excessive today -- more planes, and louder.

Sleepless in Davis

Just wanted to add encouragement - if you think this is a problem please keep filing complaints, maybe en-masse we can make a difference. When I lived in Kendall Square a group of neighbors got together and were able to get one of the big biotech firms to put a muffler on their huge noisy generator that would run all night. It took a year, but we did it...

We live about 1 mi outside Davis towards 93, the airplane noise today was unbearable, averaging about one a minute, so close I could read the airline logos on the tails from 8am (when it woke me up) until almost midnight tonight.

I understand that I live in a metro area and that airplane noise is a fact of life - even, occasionally, LOUD noise, but EVERY FRICKIN' *MINUTE* ALL DAY??

Okay, I feel moderately better having vented, but I'll feel a lot better when I can sleep again.

This is nothing new. I've taken off from Logan 4 or 5 times and the flight path has been directly over my place.

I'm really glad you posted this... just this evening I was noticing the CONSTANT planes and wondering what was up with that. I'll give them a call.

that it was frequent, but not that you mention it, there've been 5 planes since I read this.

They have the ability to make much quieter planes, but they're more 'spensive so nobody will buy 'em. :(

The wind has been from the north and northwest the last day or two, which probably has something to do with it....

Ditto. Now I just know I won't be able to think about anything else today.

NIMBY? or NIABY?

Who would you like to be forced to hear them all day then? Perhaps you'd rather the folks in Marshfield and Duxbury (http://www.stoplogannoise.com/) be the ones who get to listen to the noise?

Or do you just want people to stop flying planes, so that everyone can have a little more peace and quiet?

If you do want people to stop flying so much, calling the airlines won't help :-) For that, you could try asking everyone in the community to consider not flying, and instead take the train or choose to travel to more local destinations and telecommute (or tele-family-visit) more.

Fortunately, I think that with oil prices going up and availability going down, there will be a natural decrease in noisy airplanes all over the world. In which case, you can save your energy you're currently spending on this quest of yours for something more fun, while the problem takes care of itself! That's my plan, anyway.

I was thinking maybe the people who knowingly signed up to live in a flight path should listen to them...

Which is to say, in many cases, people who couldn't afford better housing. What makes us so much better than them that they should get all the annoyance? Planes gotta fly somewhere, and we all benefit from having an airport in the vicinity; I see no reason to use my gentrifyin' powers to stick more disenfrachised people with all the noise.

It was only since reading this thread that I suddenly became aware of a jackhammer somewhere near, the planes overhead, and the steady traffic noise on Broadway. 5 minutes ago, I'd thought it was a nice quiet Saturday morning! :-)

Gosh, noise in an urban area. Who would have thunk it?

Call your senators and congressmen and ask 'em to push for quieter planes. They can make the whole planes "lifting bodies" and put the engines on top of the wings rather than under. The added benefit is that they also require less fuel (lifting bodies need less thrust to generate lift, so the engine power is reduced)

Airlines won't adopt these planes on their own. They are more expensive and look 'weird'. But they are better for the communities around which they operate. And, as we keep hearing about everything these days, as fuel prices go up, more efficient planes will be a better value.

How can you think it's wrong to have an airport close to the city. Travelers, and business travelers in particular, depend on Logan's proximity to Boston and the inner MBTA. Think if we had to schlep out to Rockport or Cape Cod even for little shuttle flights? For anyone who has to fly regularly, it would significantly reduce the value of living in Boston or inner-suburbs like Somerville. I appreciate what everyone is saying here and I'm not at all disregarding it, but the truth is that you can't create an environment of rural quiet in an urban area. If the noise bothers you, why live here as opposed to central or western Mass, or New Hampshire?

That's a much more realistic and equitable suggestion than the ones wanting flight paths changed. We are no more entitled to quiet than any other community.

When the wind is right, planes have been flying over Davis Square for at least 10 years. This is nothing new.
