Someone posted a comment that aircraft noise had increased over Davis recently. Today, I was sick in bed and I thought I was going to go insane. An aircraft flew over my house every minute, no kidding, all day long from 5am this morning.

I'd really appreciate it if fellow Davis Square readers who dislike noise especially from aircraft could make a complaint to Logan. Please don't flame the thread if you think airplanes are cute or you simply love noise.

Unless we speak out, even a little, no one will give a damn. I spoke to the airport people and they said they will act and possibly re-route or stagger flight paths but only if they get complaints.
Apparently, ever since a new runway went in, they have received an increase in complaints.

How can you think it's wrong to have an airport close to the city. Travelers, and business travelers in particular, depend on Logan's proximity to Boston and the inner MBTA. Think if we had to schlep out to Rockport or Cape Cod even for little shuttle flights? For anyone who has to fly regularly, it would significantly reduce the value of living in Boston or inner-suburbs like Somerville. I appreciate what everyone is saying here and I'm not at all disregarding it, but the truth is that you can't create an environment of rural quiet in an urban area. If the noise bothers you, why live here as opposed to central or western Mass, or New Hampshire?

But then, what are we to do with the airplanes? Should we lobby to remove them from our airspace, only to say "Hey you Fitchburg losers, all the planes will now fly over you and your decrepit HUD houses because we refuse the noise in our gentrified oasis of tranquility," thus passing the noise out of *our* way into someone else's? The planes have to fly somewhere. There are no communities with low population density in Greater Boston. Sombody would have to get the noise unless you moved the airport to a rural area where no one could access it easily, thus crippling Boston's economy. That strikes that, so who would you choose to get the noise?

For years, Westover AFB in Chicopee has been the reserve base home to the fleet of C-5 Galaxy transport aircraft. These planes are huge -- put it this way: At 121 feet, the cargo compartment alone is longer than the distance of the Wright Brothers' first flight. Its wingspan is 222 feet. It is powerful enough to make a successful takeoff loaded with 840,000 pounds. And when it flies over you, brother, you know it. Even when they're so high up they don't look big at all.

As one from Western Massachusetts who grew up with these planes constantly overhead: Pfeh, indeed. An Airbus A300 on a Logan approach is peanuts compared to the sound and the fury of the C-5s.
