I remember hearing about a computer shop near the Kendall area that sold custom PCs. I remember my aunt saying something about getting her computers there, and hearing that it was the store of choice for MIT/Tech Square types.

Does that ring any bells for anyone here? I'm planning to get a new computer and want to check out the prices at the local merchants first.

( Posted to davis because I know there's people here who would know that store )

Sounds like http://www.pcsforeveryone.com/ , but I think they've closed their storefront and only deal over the Internet and phone now.

There is Microcenter by Central Square which will let you build everything from scratch, but they're... evil.

There is also the MIT Flea (http://www.mitflea.com/) (market), which is a geek's wet dream. But they don't build custom computers for people there. People just sell whatever they have, or maybe rebuild stuff in ways they think will sell. But it might be worth checking out.

Unfortunately, the next one isn't until mid September, as they are only once a month. And there is a small admission fee, just so you know...

There USED to be "Eli's" on Hampshire street, halfway between Kendall and Inman. PCsForEveryone was on Charles St near the Cambridgeside Galleria, but they did apparently close that storefront. It's too bad, it was a nice location... But they are still online.

Someone drove a van through their front door and took a bunch of stuff. After that I think they decided the physical presence was more trouble than it's worth....

Someone drove an SUV into Porter Square Books too, but fortunately they reopened....

I could build one for you, or point you to a good deal on a Dell or similar. Let me know what it is you are looking to do with it, possibly price ranges, etc. rethcir at gmail . com

I know there is a place up Holland Street (near Teele sq) - called TAG. I know they do IT services for businesses, but not sure if they sell hardware. Otherwise, go with Dell. If you go with a whitebox -- you'll be soooorrrry!
