Loud noises!
Sep. 12th, 2007 10:23 amAirplane noise is up 3X in Davis area this year. This is confirmed by Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership (STEP) and our mayor. You may or may not have read the articles in the news. Both STEP and our mayor have encouraged people who are annoyed by the noise, to call this number and complain:
(617) 561-3333
Here is some more info:
http://www.somervillestep.org/mt/mt-search.cgi?search=logan
The more people that call and complain the better chance we have in getting a reduction in overhead flights (so we're told).
If you don't care about the increase, or don't care about planes flying by every 40 seconds, please read all of the witty responses below instead.

Date: 2007-09-12 02:44 pm (UTC)This is a new problem to Somerville. We didn't choose to live in Winthrop where this is expected. If the weather is bad, then the people flying should have to wait.

Date: 2007-09-12 02:50 pm (UTC)What? Seriously? If the weather is still good to fly, then the planes need ot fly. Cancelling flights just because of a little rain or unfavorable wind in certain directions is a good way to fuck up air traffic all over the country.
Suck it up, buttercup. The world does not revolve around the hipsters of Davis Square.

Date: 2007-09-12 02:55 pm (UTC)Sorry, but the entire aviation industry is not going to lose money because you don't like some noise. And I'm pretty sure the tens of thousands of passengers that would be affected (not only at Logan, but across the country, as these delays spread quickly) would be pretty pissed, too. I'm going to go off on a limb and say that if you were traveling for business and just wanted to get home after a long day, and your flight is already delayed, and the captain announced that even though the runway is clear, the flight will be cancelled because some dick 6 miles away wants silence in his neighborhood - you'd be pretty pissed.
FWIW, I work in Everett, which is also along the new flight path, but closer to the airport. While it's certainly noisy enough to notice (but not bother me) while I'm outside or in my car, I can barely hear them as soon as I'm inside a building.

Date: 2007-09-12 02:58 pm (UTC)People waiting in airports/planes getting delayed/huge ramifications throughout the entire US flight system which stem from even a single delay=worthwhile so you don't have to hear planes on occassion?
Honestly.
Anyway, if this is a permanent change, then it's semi-justified to get upset/get involved. However, the planes have to go SOMEWHERE, and where should they go instead? NIMBYism is often a rather selfish attitude to take in regards issues like this (unless you also want to end air travel entirely); the planes have to go somewhere, and who else should have to hear them? Almost without exception, it's low-income families who live in areas that already have problems and couldn't afford to choose to move out of just to avoid planes overhead.
If you think that's OK, then say so. If you don't, propose something better.

Date: 2007-09-12 03:00 pm (UTC)I guess the LJ community is mostly pro-noise. In Somerville in general, I know I'm not in the minority.

Date: 2007-09-12 03:05 pm (UTC)i've been noticing the noise too but it's really intermittent. certainly it was kind of bad yesterday but otherwise we go at least a week or more with no noticeable noise.

Date: 2007-09-12 03:07 pm (UTC)"For now, both Curtatone and Port Authority officials are asking residents disturbed by planes flying overhead to record their complaints. Curtatone asked citizens to call the city’s 311 line while Leo said people should call the Port Authority’s noise complaint line at (617) 561-3333." (From the Somerville News)

Date: 2007-09-12 03:18 pm (UTC)Although having previously lived in Wisconsin, you almost never heard planes overhead.. But then again, it was also a cultural blackhole.
