In order to vote in the March 1 Massachusetts presidential primary, you must be registered by Wednesday, February 10. Voters who are enrolled in a party can vote only on that party's ballot. Registered voters who are "unenrolled" can vote on any (one) party's ballot. Doing so will not change your "unenrolled" status.

Use this form to check your registration status.

Use this form to register, change your party enrollment, or change your registration address. If you have a Massachusetts driver's license or state-issued non-driver's ID, you can submit the form online. Otherwise, you will need to print it out, sign it, and mail it (or bring it to City Hall).

More information on registration is on this page.

Hello neighbors--

On this cold winter day, I'm delighted to share the sunny news that Somerville MA has been chosen by the MassCEC (Clean Energy Center) to be a Solarize Mass community! You can see the announcement here:
http://www.masscec.com/about-masscec/news/state-energy-officials-announce-five-new-communities-participate-solar-program

State energy officials today announced the selection of the first five communities to participate in Solarize Mass for 2016.  The new municipalities participating in the community-based solar energy group-buying program that lowers overall costs of installing solar electric systems include Somerville and Natick, as well as Shelburne, Colrain and Conway, which have joined as a trio of partner communities....

You can learn more about the MassCEC and the SolarizeMass program at: www.solarizemass.com .

Winter Hill Better Block is coming! We're holding a Winter Hill Better Block festival on December 12th from 4-8pm and December 13th from 12-4pm. The Winter Hill Better Block will be centered in the area between the new Winter Hill Brewing Company (328 Broadway) and the vacant area behind the post office as well as along some areas of Marshall Street.

More details available on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/543898939101631/ But there's not as much there as I got in an email--I don't know where the email stuff is stored. I'll paste that below the LJcut.

Over the past few weeks there have been some meetings to refine some of the neighborhood discussions around improvements to Winter Hill, including events that we might have. Due to scheduling conflicts, I missed the meetings. But I have been getting the mailers, so I thought I'd tell you what I know from this. It sounds like we will have a winter market event. I think this is a genius idea to brand Winter Hill. If you've ever been to European Christmas Markets, it sounds like that to me. I have always thought that was a big gap in this region.

My only disappointment was that "skate park" seems to be skateboard. I would *love* an ice skating rink. Maybe that's just the only icon they had...?

So for the details I have on the Winter Hill Better Block event, follow below the LJ cut.

There was a City Council primary this past Tuesday (why so early? well, one of the polling places is a synagogue...) that narrowed a field of 16 to 14. There are two seats available.

Edit - forgot to mention:

Meet Your Candidates, hosted by Jay Campbell
Wednesday, September 16 at 6:30pm
Tufts University, Cohen Auditorium, 40 Talbot Avenue, Medford, Massachusetts 02155

The November election will be:
- a hotly contested mayoral election between Bob Penta (conservative not-really-an-outsider) and Stephanie Muccini Burke (progressive long-time participant in city government)
- the aforementioned City Council election
- School Committee election

I personally think participation is really important. There are problems with streets, parks, (including Wrights Pond), mild public safety issues, snow removal, and budget allocations.

Discussions are happening mainly in Facebook groups:
- Medford for Massachusetts gives good summaries of candidate platforms (also at http://medfordforma.org/): https://www.facebook.com/MedfordForMassachusetts
- Medford Square has a lot of the discussions: https://www.facebook.com/groups/medfordsquare/

If you're a parent, male or female or other, the moderated-membership Medford Moms group has a lot of discussion of the public safety issues there as well.

WalkBoston has an upcoming walking event from near Sullivan over to Assembly Row. You can walk with a group, hear some presentations by local civic groups, and learn more about their activites. If you are a pedestrian around here, you know how important it is to have advocates and allies working on related issues.

WalkBoston also showed up at snow shoveling hearings, by the way. They really walk-the-talk about pedestrian access and safety.

From their Facebook page on the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/796084150477099/

We hope you'll join WalkBoston and many Somerville co-hosts for a FREE point to point walk after work in Somerville on April 28th! The walk will start on Lower Broadway at the intersection of Mt Vernon Street and Broadway - steps from the Sullivan Square MBTA Station - and finish at Slumbrew's American Fresh Taproom at Assembly Row, steps from the Assembly MBTA Station. Groups will head out onto the route as they are filled, with the last group departing around 6pm (The 1.5mile route will take about an hour including the 5 speaker location stops).

Along the way, you'll have a chance to hear representatives from groups like East Somerville Main Streets, Friends of the Community Path, the City of Somerville, Federal Realty (and more) talk about the impact they are making in the community, and opportunities they see for more improvements!

Every New Year's Day, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission celebrates the January 1, 1776 raising of the First American Flag on Prospect Hill.

At 11:30 am, "George Washington" on horseback leads a short parade from the City Hall concourse to Prospect Hill Park. The main event starts at noon, featuring songs, readings, short speeches, military re-enactors (both Colonial and British), and refreshments (usually donuts, coffee, hot chocolate, and cider). I've enjoyed this event for many years and encourage all of you to attend it too.

In some years, the city has invited the public to climb the tower at the end of the ceremony. I don't know if it will be possible this year, since the tower has been undergoing some repairs.

To reach Prospect Hill from West Somerville, take the #87 bus to Union Square, then walk up Stone Avenue. Or take the #80 or #88 or #90 bus to McGrath Highway, and walk up Greenville Street or Prospect Hill Avenue to the park.

Here is the city's official press release about the event.

Given how little enthusiasm the races here in Massachusetts have managed to generate this year, it's not surprising that there hasn't been a post here regarding the election in almost a month.  Tomorrow is election day, and we'll elect a new Governor and several other statewide officials, and we'll also vote for one of our U.S. senate seats and on four ballot questions.

You can find out where you vote and see a sample ballot here: http://www.wheredoivotema.com/bal/MyElectionInfo.aspx

Polls are open from 7am to 8pm.

A quick report on my take about this meeting. I will try not to editorialize, but just report on the content. Anyone else who attended should feel free to add further detail, correct my perceptions, or discuss further. Full version below the cut.

'Tis that time of year--where the community members protect themselves from flu, and protect the most vulnerable members of our community, by keeping the flu away as much as possible.

Flu is not trivial to kids with leukemia, or seniors in fragile health. Or many other folks in challenging medical situations. My nephew battled leukemia for several years, and relied on the herd to keep infectious disease away from him during that rough time. He's in remission and back to full vax status, but for years I worried. I still worry for the other kids like him, though.

So get to your doctor, your pharmacy, or try these free clinics from the city. Free Flu Vaccine Schedule links to the city web site. Will post the full text here below the cut.

For this upcoming elections on November 4, the city of Somerville is changing the locations of polling places for a bunch of different precincts, so make sure you double-check where you vote before you go to the polls:

Ward 1-2: The East Somerville Community School, Glen Street Entrance
Ward 1-3: (same as above)
Ward 3-2: The Atrium, Somerville High School, 81 Highland Avenue
Ward 4-2: A Room in the Winter Hill Community School, 115 Sycamore Street
Ward 6-2: A Room in the Somerville Community Baptist Church, 31 College Avenue
Ward 7-2: A Room in the West Somerville Neighborhood School, Raymond Avenue Entrance

Source: http://www.somervillema.gov/alerts/important-polling-place-changes

If you don't know which precinct you're in, you can look it up at http://www.wheredoivotema.com/bal/MyElectionInfo.aspx ; note that the polling stations on that site haven't been updated yet, but the precinct info should be correct.

For those of you who've been following the Market Basket debacle, the Board of Directers basically voted to stall indefinitely today, so that the workers would be in danger of being fired if they stayed out longer. So the spotlight's shifted to the customers, and there's a rolling customer rally from noon to 2PM tomorrow, at every Market Basket. Will I be seeing any of you there?

There was a meeting on Wednesday for this, but I missed it. Did anyone go? Would love a debriefing.

But there's another one coming up, in case others are interested as well.

Somerville isn't actually in that district, but Ron suggested to me that there are enough readers from surrounding communities that are to warrant a friendly reminder that today is the special election to fill the Congressional vacancy left by Ed Markey's rise to the Senate.

When I voted at 10:15 a.m., I was just the 26th person to have cast a ballot in my ward and precinct. Why should more of us get out there to vote? Consider that Markey held this seat from 1976 to 2013. Now think about who has the chance to hold it for potentially the next few decades, and how few votes are currently set to decide who will represent us. It matters.

The candidates are:
Democratic: Katherine Clark
Republican: Frank Addivinola
Justice Peace Security: James Hall
Independent: James Aulenti

Here's an article detailing some of the basic differences between the D and R candidates. It's pretty much your standard D/R divide these days. James Aulenti has a campaign website, and so does James Hall.

If you're unsure whether you live in the 5th Congressional District, you can check this map to find out.
