There are several places around Davis Square and Porter square that have Yoga -- I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good place to go.

There's a really cool yoga studio in JP called Mindful Dog Yoga. It's run by a Somervillian, so that's why I'm mentioning it in this forum. I've gone to a few classes there. The space is beautiful especially in the warmer months. It's on the 3rd floor of a house and sits up in the trees, like a tree-house sort of. The only classes I've taken so far are with the owner person- he's really good- he's attentive, taking into consideration injuries and personalizes instruction a bit for you if you ask. I liked it there and highly recommend it. The studio has rotating art shows also, which I appreciate and I'm pretty sure some of the proceeds of either the art sales or the studio go to pro-animal causes, also cool.

Conveniently, if you follow the 'yoga' tag on your post, you will see previous discussions in the community, many on this subject. Hope that helps!

Though a lot of these are about Dahn Yoga, which has closed.

Yeah, more about places to avoid (Dahn Yoga, Rose Institute -- I too had a horrible experience at the latter).

I like O2 Yoga. I notice one person posted in the archives that the classes are very crowded, but in my experience that happens in the early evening, which is a popular time anywhere. If you have flexibility in your schedule and can go to a class at another time (other than 6-7 pm), you'll find the classes are smaller, more enjoyable, and the instructors can give more adjustment attention. Having said all that, I'm also curious about some other yoga studios in the area.

Has anyone been to Om City Yoga on Mass Ave near the bike path, or Yoga in the Square near the former Jimmy Tingle Theater?

I went to Om City Yoga for a while not long after it opened, but eventually stopped (now I go to Karma Yoga in Harvard Square). It's a small place, run by one woman who teaches most of the classes. There were only a few people in each class, though maybe more people go there now, I don't know. The classes were somewhat repetitive, and not at a very advanced level - that's fine for a lot of people, but I was looking to work on some more advanced poses. It's also a carpeted room, which is a little weird, and a little dark and incensey for my taste.

I've been going to Om City Yoga for a couple of months now, and I really like it. I have a number of limitations and old injuries, and I was very scared to start yoga, even though I hoped it would be good for me. But the woman who does the classes (Dee) is very good with telling people about variations, having a very non-judgmental attitude and encouraging us to be non-judgmental about ourselves, and is very open to one-on-one questions about how to make a particular posture work for you. There is some incense, yes. There is also a definite presence of a religious side of the practice - the instructor doesn't talk about it (she once mentioned that she avoids doing so to not make anyone feel excluded), but you can see from some things around the room and some of the music choices that it is important to her. I'm not bothered by any of that, and just find the place remarkably non-intimidating. That was what I needed, and it's three blocks from where I live, so I'm a happy camper.

I LOVE O2 yoga on Highland. Really friendly, great for beginners. The basics classes are a little crowded, but I've never had a problem with it.

I've tried both O2 Yoga and Karma Yoga Studio, and would recommend either. Karma might be better if you're looking to explore different styles of yoga and looking for classes to be available almost any given time of the day since it has classes throughout the day from 7am to 7:30pm. If you ever want to venture out a little further, O2 Yoga has a new space in the South End (which I just checked out today) and it's a great space. Also, you might find some helpful reviews on yelp.com.

Hey,

I highly recommend classes taught by Barbara Feldman, Director of the Cambridge Zen Center in Central Square. She teaches classes at the Zen Center (http://www.bodhimindyoga.com/classes.html) and at the BU gym (open to the public, discount if you're affiliated w/ BU, www.bu.edu/fitrec) on Comm Ave. I know neither of these are in Davis, but she's a great teacher, so I had to pass along the recommendation! I've taken Hatha Yoga classes with her at the BU gym for four semesters and really enjoyed them. The only down side is how inflexible a room full of people ten years my junior can make me feel! ;-)

i moved up to new england a year ago and am just now trying to get back into my practice. i'm having trouble finding a good Anusara class i can fit into my odd schedule :/

currently i've settled into O2 Yoga at Cedar and Highland, but i go in the middle of the day so i haven't seen it packed yet. It's definitely worth checking out, as a new student you can buy two classes for $18 and they do give a student discount.

i've had a hankering to try out Yoga in the Square but can't make the infrequent classtimes. i was hoping someone would comment positively about that :/

i Wanted to try Om City on Mass Ave but they never have classes i can make (which now makes sense if it's only run by one person). i went to baron baptiste near Porter once and it kicked my ass, i'd never been to a hot class before and that seems to be all they do. it was definitely pretty full but i think there was some teacher thing going on the day i went. nice space and they have a lot of various times. i think my first class was free with a free mat and towel as well.

i really enjoy the space that karma has, though i was confused as to Where it was (downstairs) when i first tried to go. they have a lot going on, but personally it's kind of a pain to get there so i've only been once.

i've been realllly interested in Back Bay yoga but again with the schedule thing and the location, haven't made it yet. there's a place in arlington also that i haven't tried, i'm not sure if it's T accessible though.
i'm sure that wasn't really helpful, so the end result is to let us know what you end up trying and liking ;)

I've been to a few of the Bo Forbes classes at Yoga on the Square - they're a little advanced, but I liked them a lot. Unfortunately I think she won't be teaching there for long. I went to one of the hot yoga classes a few months ago and I liked it too, though I needed a long nap after! Quirks of the space are - big mirror on the wall and sometimes you can smell Redbones BBQ.

I've also been to a few of the gentle yoga classes at Karma Yoga, a few blocks from Harvard Square. Lots of good core work and a very nice space with a cafe in front. I'd like to try some other classes there too.

Greetings,
Om City Yoga is now 3 years old and has evolved and changed a LOT in those 3 years. I still teach all the classes but there is a lot of variety and the class levels are quite varied.

IF YOU WANT TO BE CHALLENGED (PHYSICALLY) - come to our Sunday Vinyasa 2 class at 5 PM. This is a work out - - no matter who you are.
We also have Vinyasa on Wed. 7:45 and on Saturday mornings at 11 AM.

There are many options for beginners as well and our longstanding and popular Gentle Yoga class on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM.

Plans are in the works for 2009 to add Rock & Roll Yoga Fitness for those who want to combine cardio and core work into the yoga for an intense whole body work out.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have on our studio.
