Are you sharing a personal experience or is there a change in the recycling bins they hand out at Franey Road.
For the records, I'm frustrated that the bins don't have lids (way to invite pests), that they are stingy with the recycling bins (you have to pry them out of the attendant's hands-obviously someone's training her to guard them closely-are people selling them or something?) that things have to be sorted and that they are small. I think everyone should get a bin on wheels with a flip lid attached to it, but I guess only building 6 units or more get those?
No, I'm telling people that these bins, which are rarely available, are now available. Vets of this board know there can asometimes be a 3 month wait to get a new bin.
Wow its worse than I thought. I my experience you could get them if you showed a driver's license and a utility bill (good luck of your license has not been changed to your new address yet, which frequently happens when you don't drive) and a little determination. I didn't know that sometimes they plain didn't have them at all even in a stingy manner.
I'd be happy to pay for these (either to Somerville or the Home Depot) if I could have a bigger one with a lid.
Here's what the dpw annual mailing says about the lidded containers. If you really want one I say call and ask about them!
Multifamily property management, absentee owners, and small/ medium size businesses can take advantage of backyard/ basement recycling carts for collecting papers and commingled material. The Environmental Protection Office offers sturdy 65-gallon recycling carts at a reduced price of $60.00 per cart. Please call (617) 625-6600 x5105 to discuss purchase. Please note that these carts are customized for easy mechanical pickup by a recycling truck, and other similar-looking carts may not be compatible.
That's true, but while I might religiously rinse out my milk cartons, there is probably still a food residue and mostly I can't control my tenant's behavior to that degree. Forcing them to keep lids on the garbage 100% of the time is the only goal I can really focus on. If I gave them a blue bin with a flip lid, there'd be almost no risk of pests.
Don't worry...the city doesn't want us to put lids on our garbage cans when we put them out, so there will be plenty of treats to attract the vermin besides the recycling bins.
Maybe I'm a dolt for asking this, but do people actually rinse out their soda and beer cans? Cause I'd think a lot of pests would be attracted to sweet or yeasty smells.
*imagines a raccoon digging and flinging things everywhere, only to get to a coke can at the very bottom of the bin, and tipping it up to his tiny pointy mouth to get the last drop, followed by "aaahhhhh."*

Her: Sure, how many do you want?
Me: Two?
Her: Here you go!
Me: Thanks!
No prying, no driver's license, no utility bill. I was all "Yay Somerville DPW!"

Date: 2009-08-05 08:29 pm (UTC)I keep contemplating buying a large bin, but can't get over the cost since we'd still need to separate paper and not paper.
