Hi All. Hope this won't be deemed too off-topic. I called the Globe since my account was one of the ones possibly compromised by the January 29th breach and threatened to cancel and they immediately offered me 12 weeks at 50% off. Of course, I was so livid that a company of their size had a breach of this magnitude that I cancelled anyway. The letter they sent out offered a year of free credit monitoring service but nothing in the way of "making it up" to subscribers. Anyway, if you have no intentions of cancelling, you ought to at least call to say you are thinking about cancelling to get a discount. Why they didn't just outright offer this to everyone escapes me.

The number they provide for customers with possibly-compromised accounts is:

My local T stop is Davis Square, so I'm around the area almost every day. I thought it would be easiest to actually coordinate with someone from this community if they were interested in these items.

We just got our first electric bill for 2006. The rate went up by 65%. Gah!!

Have other NSTAR Electric customers in the Davis area observed this? Had anyone gotten advance notice of a rate-hike this large? Any light the community can shed would be appreciated.

Note: to arrive at 65%, I took the "Basic Svc Fixed" constant from my 2/2/06 bill and divided it by the same constant in my 1/5/06 bill to get the ratio of the two numbers. Subtract 1 and multiply by 100 to get the % increase.

.12260/.07694 = 1.6454 = a 64.54% increase.

This approach factors out the different amount of electricity you might have consumed from one month to the next. We're just looking at what NSTAR charges per kilowatt-hour (KWH).

I would be interested in similar calculations from other NSTAR customers!

EDIT: I evidently missed an identical discussion here a week ago. Call me slow on the uptake this month.

I will call NSTAR's customer service during business hours and ask if there was supposed to be an increase in the "Basic Svc Fixed" portion between this bill and the last. If they say "Yes, 65%", then I'll find out how that came to pass in light of the rate cut in their press release. If they say something less than that, I'll ask them to correct the error in my bill. Stay tuned.

I've traditionally done my own taxes, but this year I have a variety of issues (primarily related to my two-family house, which I live in & receive rental income from - and which I did a ton of work on last year) that I feel might be better addressed by a professional. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.
