I'm sure I'm not the only person who felt totally overwhelmed by this weekend's Somerville Open Studios, with over 340 artists at more than 100 separate locations. I made the following suggestion to several of the artists whom I visited, and they seemed sympathetic:

Draw an arbitrary line through the city. Everyone west of the line exhibits on SOS weekend #1. Everyone east of it exhibits on the following weekend. Or maybe even split the city (and the event) up into three successive weekends.

What do you all think?

Other than Mixit Studios (the printing place at the end of Winslow just off the bikepath) and the Russians at the former masonic temple, I think every studio I saw this year was one I hadn't been to before. At least one, Skye Kismyth Schulte, was new this year, but I'm sure several of the others have been around for years and I just never went to them. I thought about it afterward and even with the most optimistic estimate of how many studios you could get to in an hour, it'd take at least 25 full days of open studios to see them all! I wonder if we have more new studios each year, than one could see that year, even without visiting old favorites.

So let's share. What are some new (to you) studios you saw this year that you especially liked?

I just heard about this rental listing:
http://boston.craigslist.org/off/158729423.html

This is the building that Spark Crafts Studio is in. Their space is amazing. Figured I'd pass this on in case anyone knows of a business looking for a 3,778 sq ft space at $22/sq ft. That amount per sq ft is seems to be on the lower side of things for this area from what I know. Not that I'm saying it's cheap! ;)

With the weather turning nicer I have been doing more running. Most of my normal running routes take me through Davis Square. I feel like there are a lot more bikes on the sidewalks in Davis Square than there were last year (my only other year in Somerville to compare it to).

Just a reminder:

According to Somerville Traffic Regulations,

Non-motorized transportation conveyances are prohibited from operating on sidewalks and in parks in certain districts as hereinafter defined. Persons operating non-motorized transportation conveyances must dismount said conveyances and walk within these districts.

(a) Davis Square – On Holland Street, from Irving Street to College Avenue; On Elm Street, from College Avenue to Windom Street; on Highland Avenue, from Cutter Avenue to College Avenue; and on College Avenue from Highland Avenue to Morrison Avenue; and on all intersecting ways within those limits a distance of fifty feet from the above named streets.

In addition, Pedestrians shall have the right-of-way over bicycles on all sidewalks and in all crosswalks. The operator of a bicycle shall yield to pedestrians in all traffic situations. (all of this is on page 53 of that .pdf)

That means that if you are riding on your bike, I am coming in the opposite direction, and there are a few people walking between us, I get to go around them without having to yield to you and your bike. I have almost been run into several times, and only avoided it because *I* backed down.

Cell Only?

So I just got a fat bill from RCN for a land line I barely use. I have cell service with verizon. Seems pretty stupid to have two phones. What do I need to think about (aside from the task of updating everyone who only have my landline #). Should I cut the cord?

Does anyone have recommendations for an inexpensive place to get shirts pressed? I have a big stack of them fresh from the washer that are a wrinkled mess... and I'm cheap! =)

Thanks
