Anybody know a cheap place to get a watch battery replaced in Davis? I used to go to a inexpensive jeweler in the Sq. till he closed a few years ago. Last time I got it done in Harvard Sq. at a watch store and they charged me like $30 ....which is probably nearly 1/2 the value of the actual watch at this point! Thanks in advance.

Apropos of the of the discussion about airplane noise: I was awoken this morning at 6:15 by a jet going overhead. Since I'd had a late night I tried to get back to sleep. Less than 2 minutes later another jet flew by. Then another, and another and another. I counted 5, low and loud.

It did seriously suck and it made me wonder: are there really that many flights scheduled so early in the morning?

Sometime in the past...I dunno...year to 18 months or so, I saw a band mentioned on the live music calendar at Johnny D's. It was on a day I couldn't be there, and I can't remember why, or I'd probably know WHEN it was. Anyway, the write-up compared this band's stuff to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and other generally amazing musicians. I even looked them up online and perused their website a few times.

Now, I cannot for the LIFE of me remember who they were.

I blogged about it, but examining my memories and archives hasn't turned up the post. Even though I enabled search engine searching of my journal, LJSeek isn't recognizing that yet.

The band is, I believe, from the NY area. They are fronted by a man. I think the name of the band is of the format "So-and-so and his something-or-other", and I think that the so-and-so in the name is NOT the name of the guy in the band. I could be wrong about this stuff, but then again, I could be right.

Johnny D's music calendars only seem to be available back to May, and it was definitely before then. I haven't seen their name on those calendars again in that time, and I'm darn sure I'd recognize it if I saw it again.

Can anyone help me out here, maybe?

EDIT: Found it! It's Spottiswoode and his Enemies. Apparently I missed another Johnny D's appearance of theirs in July. Waaah.

The Somerville Arts Council presents Hawaiian Night tomorrow night (Friday) in Union Square, as part of the ArtsUnion series. From an e-mail I received:

"DJ Brother Cleve, Somerville's ubiquitous connoisseur of lounge and exotica, will launch the evening with a tropical soundtrack to a backdrop of vintage surf and Hawaiiana footage. The Mai Tai Serenaders, featuring Rick Russo on ukelele, will croon to the sounds of Hawaiian Pop. Paying tribute to more traditional art forms, Polynesian Dance Arts will perform Tahitian dance as well as the story driven Hulas of Hawaii. Headlining the evening is Waitiki, presenting lounge sounds in the vein of Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Arthur Lyman, along with original compositions, for a sonic Tiki cocktail.

The evening will finish with a pastiche of clips from films and documentaries about Hawaiian music, including Susan Friedman's "The Ki Ho'alu: That's Slack Key Guitar." As always, Todd Sargent (responsible for turning the space under McGrath Highway into a 70s dance rave up this summer) will create a magical landscape, festooning Union Square with palm trees and other tiki ephemera.
