Howdy folks,

Just a reminder that The Somerville Garden Club is having its monthly meeting Wednesday, 10/10/2007, 7pm at the Tufts Administration Building (TAB), up on the 2nd floor.

The TAB is at 167 Holland St., about halfway between Davis Square and Teele Square.

The meeting is FREE and ALWAYS on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.

You don't need it to attend our meetings, but if you'd like to buy a membership, you can do so at the table near the door when you come in. Or you can mail us a check (address info on the website). It costs $20 and nets you our delightful monthly newsletter (we'll have some freebies at the meeting if you'd like to take a gander), access to our mailing list (where we send out invitations to members-only garden visits as well as other announcements and information), and a 10% discount at both Pemberton's and also (new benefit) Mahoney's Garden Centers.

The meeting consists of announcements, round table (where anyone can ask a gardening-related question and get answers from experts), a lecture (Anna Warrock will be presenting on how to force bulbs), and a raffle. Raffle tickets are 50 cents a piece. The raffle can contain all sorts of interesting plants as well as books, vases, gardening magazines, and other garden-related paraphernalia.

Please join us! We're always delighted by new company.

Regards,
Kelly J. Cooper
SGC Secretary

p.s. I'm always looking for writers. We can't pay our authors, but you'll be professionally edited, the layout is gorgeous (another professional, donating her time), and the newsletter makes a great clip for your file.

This Saturday, October 13, I'll be leading the 15th Annual Tour de Somerville for the Somerville Bicycle Committee and the Friends of the Community Path.

This year's ride will explore the flat side of Somerville, avoiding all of the city's hills. We'll ride along the Community Path and its future extension, then take a level, low-traffic route through East Somerville to the Mystic River at Assembly Square. From there, we'll ride alongside the river into a bit of South Medford, then return through West Somerville back to our starting point.

The Tour begins at 10 am at Seven Hills Park, behind the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. Our nine-mile ride will be leisurely-paced, easy for cyclists of all ages. We strongly encourage all riders to wear helmets.

In case of rain, we'll postpone the ride to Sunday, October 14, same starting time and location.

For more information, call Ron Newman, 617-628-8895, or email RNewman@theCIA.net

Somerville State Legislators Sponsor Event to Elect Fred Berman.

State Senator Pat Jehlen and Representatives Denise Provost and Carl Sciortino are jointly sponsoring a fundraiser in support of Fred Berman's campaign for Alderman-at-Large in the November city election.

The event will be held at Johnny D's in Davis Square on Monday, October 15 from 5 to 7 PM.   Refreshments will be served and donations to the campaign gladly accepted. The Darbys, a local band of musicians, will provide live music.

Berman is a first-time candidate who has been active in efforts to bring responsible development to Assembly Square and Union Square, to get an Orange Line T stop and the Green Line extension for Somerville, to protect the affordability of rental and first-time home ownership housing, and to expand access to important services like tax filing assistance, job search support, and health care enrollment.

"Fred Berman is as knowledgeable, creative, and practical in his approach to city problems as anyone I've ever met," said Jehlen.

"Fred is great at bringing people together," said Provost. "He's patient. He listens. He's a great mediator and communicator."

"Fred is an incredibly hard worker. He can be a strong leader for Somerville," said Sciortino.

"I'm honored to have the support of these respected community leaders," said Berman. "I'm also grateful to all the people who have opened their doors and spoken candidly with me about Somerville's strengths and challenges.

"Our conversations have only reinforced my belief that working in partnership, we can do better ... in preparing our young people for their futures, in protecting the affordability of our housing stock, in addressing the barriers to fuller participation in the community by seniors and persons with disabilities, in promoting the kind of development that enhances our quality of life, protects and adds to our open space, and relieves dependence on residential property taxes and State Aid.

"I look forward to winning the confidence and support of voters from across the City, and to the opportunity and privilege of representing them on the Board of Aldermen."

Berman has worked in human services for 25 years, at the non-profit, municipal, state, and legislative levels, designing, raising funds for, and managing programs serving seniors, youth, homeless and at-risk households, and people seeking new or better jobs.    He has been involved as a volunteer or board member with numerous organizations.

He and his wife, Lori Segall, a co-founder of Somerville Climate Action, live in the house they bought on Cherry Street 11 years ago.

I am trying to get a pre-purchase inspection done on an '03 Accord I am selling. Bonney Auto is able to squeeze us in early in the morning and do it while we wait, but I haven't been able to find many reviews on the place. I don't know anything about cars, so I'm looking for someone honest (though I'm fairly confident nothing is wrong with the car).

Does anyone have experience with this place?

The other option I've found who can do this in the morning is Street Wise Auto.

Anyone know good local places for getting trophies, plaques, etc.? I assume that various local teams need that sort of thing from time to time. I'm looking for a place that can do custom-engraved plaques.

Someone broke the window and stole stuff from Cameras Inc. overnight. They were in the process of repairing the window when I walked by this morning. Somerville Journal article

I had a blast at The Honk! Festival and Parade this past weekend. I took tons of photos, most of which can be found here. Enjoy!

While looking for something completely different, I came across this map of Somerville 150 years ago. Very interesting to see, for example, that the high school is still in the same place. Anyone know of other historical maps on line?
