Isn't there something in the snow emergency rules/laws where you're supposedly not allowed to pile the snow you clear from your sidewalk/driveway in the street? Or do the parking lanes not count as street? Cause I went to dig my car out just now (work all day and then out with friends and figured I'd do it now before the temp drops too much and the fluff gets crusty hard). The people whose driveway was in front of me created a massive mountain of snow right in front of (in fact, partially ON) my car, while the people with the driveway behind my car decided to copy them and create their own little mountain of snow. And by "little" I mean almost as tall as me. So instead of digging through just the snow that fell around my car, and that bit that the plow pushed over...I had to dig through two mountains as well.

So again I ask, aren't you required to NOT put the snow in the street?

And yes, I realize it would have been better to park in front of my own house instead of up the street, but my neighbor parked in front of my house. You know how I treated their car? I made a point, while shoveling, to clear around their doors on the drivers' side and was sure not to pile the snow around their car. Note the complete and total lack of burying somebody else's car. How hard was that?

Just...

Grrrrrrrr.

ETA I apologize if this is an over-abundance of griping for a community as opposed to a personal journal (perhaps I should have waited til this morning to write instead of doing it immediately after the shoveling adventure), but between the bitching/moaning I was trying to ask a legitimate question re: the legality of piling all the snow in the street.

Thank you

I just want to thank people in the community for all the support they have shown to me the past 2 weeks.

The last week has been hard ( you can read about it here ) but this morning I was able to get another 14 day bed at Harvard Sq Shelter which keeps me out of harms way past Christmas. I am still waiting on a few other long term solutions. That maybe the hardest part of this lifestyle...wait, wait and wait )

Today a church in Central Square is passing out winter coats to all that need them.

Again I would like to remind people that if you have an old desktop computer lying around the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter would be thrilled to give it a new home. The shelter has 3 old computers running Windows 2000 but 2 of them have died completly and the only working machine is not long for the world. While Harvard students run the shelter they get no direct support from the university. I am sure Harvard throws away machines daily but the students have tried to get something with no luck.

Again thank you. My dream of getting a laptop for my son for Christmas looks like it will happen.

I'm wondering how much to bundle up tonight. Are the trolleys heated or the open-air variety? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

So... has anyone else had car trouble so far this winter?

Just wanted to share the awesome between-2-and-9-a.m. event that I was blessed enough to wake up to.

Thank you. Thank you for not leaving a note and ruining my morning by requiring me to read something. Thanks for driving at ungodly speeds up my tiny one way street.

Last night I saw a cab knock a neighbor's side view mirror off. He just took off, too.

I noticed this afternoon that a bunch of spaces in Davis Square have signs on them that say "No Parking" for Sunday, December 16th from 12-5. For example in the Rite Aid (formerly Brooks) parking lot. Can someone tell me what's going on? Thanks :)

Came out of my house this morning to see this (really *ugly*) aqua blue office chair in the street. First I thought some chair-like alien had landed and needed assistance but then it dawned on me that someone had put that out to save their parking space. Never saw that on this street (Hawthorne) before (wait - one house up the other end does this). Always seemed more of a Southie/North End type of thing to do.

It always seems kind of bizarre to me (and I was tempted to move the chair to some snow mound but I was in a rush) but with this recent light fluffy snow, it seems like a stretch for anyone to make a land grab based on sweat equity.

Oh well. Some people shovel, some people don't. Some people put ugly furniture in the street, some people don't.

Hey folks -

I'm looking for a nicely made platform bed (with drawers underneath).  What I have in mind is fairly simple but I'd like it to be well made and most of what I find in stores is not exactly what I want.

Anyone know of a good local carpenter, cabinet maker?  Or a store that sells made to order stuff?
