I see Museum of Modern Renaissance (the Russian painters in the former Masonic temple on College Ave) isn't on this year's Somerville Open Studios map, alas. Artists that are definitely on my list:

#104: Behind The Mask, 6 Campbell Park Place - masks and puppets of many sizes

#7: Bonnie Denis, Brickbottom C506 - sock creatures

#73: Molly Tomlinson, 110 Boston Ave - urban/natural photos

What else do you recommend, and why?

If you went on Saturday, what new ones did you see that really got you?

Hi Davis Square Folks,

Milton and Fred Ochieng' are brothers from Kenya whose village sent them to America to become doctors. But after losing both parents to AIDS they are left with a heartbreaking task: to return home and finish the health clinic their father started before getting sick. Unable to raise enough money on their own, the brothers are joined by students, politicians, and a rock band who launch a fund raising drive among young people across the United States. Sons of Lwala follows Milton and Fred on their incredible journey as they find a way, despite all odds, to open their village's first hospital.

Sons of Lwala will be shown Thursday, May 14, 8:00 - 9:15 p.m. at the Somerville Theater in Davis Square, followed by a brief talk and question and answer session with a Board Member connected to the work in Kenya.

Tickets In Advance: go to http://lwalacommunityalliance.org/donate/ and make a donation of $10 to LCA Health and General Fund. Bring email confirmation to the show. If you do not want to donate online you may email BostonLwala@gmail.com to reserve tickets.

At the Door:
You may purchase tickets at the door.

100% of the proceeds will go to a non-profit organization (the Lwala Community Alliance) that supports health care and education in Lwala, Kenya.

To learn more about Milton and Fred, read the Associated Press story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25573377/

Hey, all. We have a perfectly serviceable cube dorm fridge and Viewsonic M70b 17" CRT monitor that we no longer need nor want (or at least not as much as we want the space they have now vacated :). Currently on the porch at 40/42 Thorndike St, right off the bike path. Nicely en route to the "Behind the Mask" open studio from Davis.

Peace.

updated: Fridge gone. Monitor still available.

Community-supported agriculture is where you buy a share in a nearby farm or group of farms, and every X time interval they bring you - whatever they've got. So sometimes you're buried in Swiss chard, other times you're bombarded with unfamiliar squash, and sometimes there's just not anything you like or aren't allergic to.

Enter Daughter of CSA. (CSAlly?) Would folks here be interested in meeting at, say, Diesel, on, say, Tuesday evenings, to sell your CSA excess to folks like me who have no cars and don't have big enough families to warrant buying a full share? Wouldn't have to be just CSA members, of course; if your back yard has been taken over by tomatoes or zucchini, I'm-a there, paysan.

Anyway, if I get enough nibbles, I'll start a separate community so sellers can post what they're bringing & find out whether any buyers are planning to show up, etc.

POLITICAL INCORRECTITUDE WARNING! If you never go to the movies, don't know who Jack Sparrow is, or have no sense of humor, STOP HERE!

All right, matey, let's parley. Pirates these days are getting younger and younger, and tend to show up at birthday parties woefully unprepared. I have here 21 pirate party-favor packs, each containing a Barbary scimitar, Jolly Roger bandana, Deadmen's Guild ring (adjustable), and eye patch. Retail value $8 each, but bein' a patriotic privateer, see, I appropriated 'em from some Somalian bilge rats, so you can have the lot for $25, savvy? Hoist me a signal if you're interested. We can meet at my home port, or perhaps Diesel Bay or JP Licks Isle.
