The Somerville Licensing Commission last night approved the application of 'True Bistro, LLC' for a liquor license to open a vegan restaurant at 1153 Broadway. This is the current location of Teele Square Cafe (formerly Soleil Cafe).

I heard something that sounded like a series of explosions last night about 9:30-10'ish. Were there fireworks in the area / surrounding areas?

Due to some combination of high wind and careless garbage pickup, all our plastic garbage can lids have vanished. As far as I know, no store will sell a lid separate from the can (and Tags specifically refused to do this). Does anyone have a counterexample? I'd rather not waste time and money replacing perfectly functional garbage cans if there's an alternative.

And besides, have you ever run through the comedy of errors that ensues when you try to tell the garbage collection folks to take the can as well as the garbage? Never again, I tell you.

EDIT: RubberMaid (at least) will allow you to order just the lid via their toll free number. Call 888-895-2110, between 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. M-F. Give them the part number -- that's what they use to identify which part you're ordering -- and a credit card # to pay. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. Enjoy!

Actually, it's been up, and I forgot to post about it here!  It's about thrift stores in Davis Square thriving during the economy...though it's already outdated, thanks to Poor Little Rich Girl's announcement that they're moving!

I've had a few people email me to ask if they could guest-post over the summer while I'm back in Texas — sure!  If you're interested in writing a guest column(s) or article(s), shoot me an email.  I'm thrilled you guys are interested in doing that!  hallie(underscore)mathia(at)emerson(dot)edu

I'm amazed by how many people in the comments have eaten at one or the other. I guess we can expect the lines to double in no time. Is Kelly's the real winner?

(forwarded from the city's Ward 7 Resistat mailing list)

PARTICIPATE IN POWDER HOUSE COMMUNITY SCHOOL REUSE FOCUS GROUP: The City of Somerville is seeking community volunteers to participate in a Powder House/Teele Square Focus Group. The Group will be led by City staff to gather community consensus on a vision for the future and identify steps to make that vision a reality. Through this focus group, we hope to work with the Ward 7 residents to formulate the best possible plan for the future of the Powder House Community School site. This is a large plot of land, with many possible reuse and redevelopment options.

The Focus Group will meet over a four month period in the summer and fall. Final recommendations will be presented to the Board of Aldermen in Fall 2010. In conjunction with Focus Group meetings, at least two presentations will be made to the general public before a proposal is submitted to the Board of Aldermen. Discussion will include data about the area, ideas for a sustainable future, and how zoning amendments might help implement the vision. After the vision and zoning lays the foundation for the future, the City will prepare a Request for Proposals (RFP) for disposition which will be specific to expected uses of the site and benefits to the community. There will also be opportunities for community involvement in the RFP process.

If you are interested in participating in the Powder House/Teele Square Focus Group, please contact Economic Development Planner Brad Rawson at 617-625-6600 ext. 2518, or BRawson@somervillema.gov. Please include a 1-2 sentence description of your interest in the project to help ensure a balanced cross-section of community stakeholders in the Focus Group. Interested individuals should apply by Wednesday, May 5th.

As a part of the Cambridge Science Festival, local* educational non-profit TERC is hosting an event at its offices tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

More information about the Martial Boneyards can be found here.
More information about Blue Mars can be found here.
More information about tomorrow's event can be found here.

* I think this location is local enough to be posted in the DSLJ, especially as the Porter Square LJ is very quiet. if it's too far afield, let me know and I'll move this.

I need a new leather or pleather portfolio/folder thing, of the type that you bring resumes to an interview in if you don't use a briefcase. Mine has grown ratty from overuse these days. The old one was a gift from a non-local relative, so I don't know where it came from. Has anybody seen these in stores locally or semi-locally? Or have one you don't use that you could sell to me? (Ordinarily I would just get a briefcase, but I also carry an enormous shoulder bag, so I think I'd look schlepped down with a briefcase added). Thanks!

Anyone have any recommendations for a Limo service? I am in need of one for a bachelor party. If anyone knows one or can pass along any info (good or bad) I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Any recommendations? Looking to travel to Italy quite soon, and could use some help finding the right place to stay.

I can't believe this hasn't been asked before, but I didn't see a tag that looked useful, so if anyone's already seen this addressed here, please point me in the right direction!
