I am looking for a place to pick up something for dessert after work tonight on my way to a date (dinner at a girl's house). Is there any place preferably right in Davis that I could grab anything that would be appropriate, besides Kickass Cupcakes?

Can anyone give a recommendation of someone who will come out and show me around my Burnham steam boiler and what my maintenance routine should be? I know I'm supposed to periodically drain and refill, but am nervous to do it on my own the first time. I'm looking for someone who will walk me through the basics - it could be a plumber or just anyone else who owns one and can show a newbie (I'd pay). I've been here over two years and haven't done anything at all yet. I don't want to contact NStar, they won't do this during heating season and I feel I kinda got ripped off by them when I signed up for their special plan two years ago (it included an annual maintenance but they never tell you can only get it during the off-heating season, so I missed out)

Old hinges?

Help me, O DSLJ! I made the foolish mistake of throwing away my bedroom door's hinges when I took it off to repaint it. They were in bad shape and I thought they would be easily replaced -- but I was wrong! It turns out that 3 x 3.5" hinges are extremely non-standard. Or at least, extremely particular to Somerville.

So I'm hoping that someone out there has a couple of old hinges looking for a nice door to hang out with. They need to have three holes and be 3 inches wide (measured from bottom corner to bottom corner when open, across the join) and 3.5 inches high (measured from bottom corner to top corner, excluding height of hinge itself). (I'm also searching Ebay, but no luck yet.)

So, where's a good place to get soup in the area?   I know Au Bon Pain has soup but anywhere else?

Looking for a couple of flavor options, take-out and in the Powderhouse/Davis/Teele Square area.

Please let me know.

Best,

The artists of Vernon Street are holding their Fall Open Studios this weekend -- Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 pm.

Vernon Street Studios are in the huge Rogers Foam factory buildings at the corner of Central and Vernon streets -- a pleasant 25-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride from Davis Square.

This is your chance to visit and enjoy the artists of these buildings in a leisurely manner, without worrying that you are missing out on the rest of Somerville Open Studios in the spring.

(Are you a Vernon Street artist? If so, please comment here and promote yourself!)

As the holidays approach (AHHH), we're interested in getting some Christmasey baby pictures done of our 3 month old. There are plenty of corporate type portrait studios around, but we'd rather give our money to a small business or individual. We don't know anything about taking photos of babies, other than the candids we snap.

Do you fine folks have any recommendations, or are maybe a willing photographer yourself?

Slumbrew is a new Somerville-based craft nano-brewer which last week introduced its first three beers: Flagraiser IPA, Happy Sol, and Porter Square Porter (which has cacao from Taza Chocolate).

Their official launch party will be this Friday from 5 to 8 pm at the Independent in Union Square.
